Berlin in the Winter?
 

Hello. I have been asked to join a friend in Berlin in February for the Berlin Film Festival. I love Berlin, but I don't know what to expect for winter travel there. Any insight would be so appreciated.

I wouldn't want to rain, or sleet, or snow on your parade, so to speak, but don't expect the weather to be great. If you've been there before, and if you're going for the film fest, you'll be indoors most of the time, anyway. You can always sneak outside when the sleet clears. Just be sure to bring enough warm clothes.

It will probably be rainy so take your umbrella and also cold, but the U-ban (subway) is great and we saw everything we wanted to see with that and our feet.It's a remarkable city and you'll be able to see the eastern part of the city that was behind a wall when we were last there.

My sister lives in Berlin and it is freezing cold there now. In February it won't be as bad as it is now, but still very cold and grey. Expect rain and cold wind. I've learned to dress in layers when visiting her, then if we are surprised by an occasional sunny spurt, we just peel off 1 jacket and are still ok. Not sure if you are a female or male, but if female, I would recommend wearing silk or light-weight leggings under jeans as they hug your legs snuggly and keep you warm. We have found that most museums and palaces (San Souci in Potsdam, for example) don't heat the rooms up much during the winter and one's toes and legs can get ice cold without proper layers of protection.

Some of the main attraction sites have shorter hours, or even closed during Nov-March (I think). But IMHO, Berlin is such a fun city anytime of the year .. you'll have a great time! :)

I've been in very late November; it was damp, as usual, and that made the cold seem a little more intense. BUT, the main sites were wonderfully uncrowded and the K-D-W food hall was as wonderful as ever.

Enjoy your stay and try to get out of Mitte at least once.

Rainy and possibly sleety and chilly. It's not really that cold - or it would be all snow - not rain or sleet.

Just take an umbie and waterproof booties and you'll be fine.

Thank you all soo much for your insight. I think I am up for the challenge of parading through the wet and cold with the Beliners, though I must say that it is not as enticing an offer after hearing your honest feedback. Thanks again, everyone.
