Berlin in December

What is the weather like the first week of December. I'm traveling with 15 California Surf City teenagers. How cold, snow level, rainy, how much will the weather slow our sightseeing down? What is the fun thing to do with 16-17 yr olds? Will our vegetarians have a difficult time with meals?

Vegetarian food is common in Berlin.

I've no figures for the weather, but suggest fur hats, leather gloves, scarves, two pairs of stout shoes or boots to keep the damp out, and plenty of dry socks for the same purpose.

I can't weee that the weathjerb will slow your sightseeing at all. At Zoo, Freidrichstrasse and Alexamderplatz stations you can buy for about ten marks a Berlin Atlas. It's sold in the S-Bahn information office. With thjat, you can ask your hotel r hostel keeper each morninmg to show you just where each new place is, and decide how to go by S-Bahn (the elevated railway), underground, or bus. The number 100 bus is a tourist trip of itself, and the westbound one goes through the Brandenburg Gate. Your one-day or one week travel card covers busses as well as S-Bahn and U-Bahn.

I'm back home in London from 10 July: please write then if I can help further.

Ben Haines, in Teplice

In early December, snow is uncommon in Germany. But there is a good chance that you get rain and temperatures only a few degrees above freezing which makes for rather awful weather conditions.

A tip for vegetarian food are the turkich restaurants and take-aways (very common in Berlin). Falafel is the common vegetarian fast-food but most turkish take-aways should offer a variety of very tasty vegetarian dishes.

As far as fun things go, in Germany 16-year olds are allowed to drink beer and go alone to pubs, clubs etc. until midnight (longer under supervision of an adult). The nightlife in Berlin offers a lot of possibilities and is normally the most interesting thing for teenagers.

I don't know whether Berlin has a christmas market but if it has one, it should be open by early December.

There are a several tours and museums about the Nazi past and the wall which are certainly interesting to visit. And I think that the german parliament is open for visitors.
Hello! Expect cold, rainy, miserable weather and then you'll be pleasantly surprised if it's not. One thing to keep in mind is that the days here are really short in the winter. I'm a vegetarian and was in Berlin a few weeks ago and had no problems. It's a huge city and there are lots of restaurants, especially on Kurfuerstendamm(sp? - Ku'damm).

Hi,
when going to berlin be sure to see the east, especially Frankfurter Allee, and the Prenzlauer Berg district. At PB you will find the "new germany" with the coolest joints, techno, house, street life and so on. The Frankfurter allee is something like a "time machine" it will show you how it felt to live in socialism, east berlin capital of DDR.

Have fun
