Berlin Hotels
 

My husband and I (seniors) will be visiting Berlin for three nights the end of this August. Can anyone please recommend a four or five star hotel. Any other suggestions to have a pleasant stay are greatly appreciated. Thank you.

For a 5 star hotel, I agree with Richard's recomendation on the historical grand Hotel Adlon. Another grand 5 star hotel is the brand new Hotel de Rome which also has a great location closer to the museum island. I can also recommend the Regent hotel on Gendarmenmarktplatz. Both the Regent & Adlon have great gourmet star restaurants.

I would also consider staying at the newer (than the others mentioned) Ritz-Carlton.

Its location might be a little off-putting as compared to the Adlon but for what you get it might be worth that to you.

Have you looked at the reviews on TripAdvisor? In this case worth doing so IMO.

Enjoy Berlin...it is a great city.

My absolute favourite among Berlin's 5* hotels would be the Grand Hyatt. Modern design, great rooftop pool and spa area, pleasant service and nice rooms with great bathrooms.

I haven't tried the Hotel de Rome yet (only had drinks in hte lobby over a meeting), but it looked very appealing to me, too, and its location just between Unter den Linden and Gendarmenmarkt is lovely.

The Adlon is a bit too plush for me - and I hate being examined at the entrance (which OTOH is a must to keep some privacy to the guests given the curb appeal).

My favourite 4* would be the Radisson SAS with a neat location between Hackescher Markt and Unter den Linden, right by Museum Island. Again nice uncluttered modern design, and an interesting lobby featuring a huge aqarium. The beds cannot live up to the Revive beds at the Mariott, though.

This is absolutely a matter of taste. I've stayed at the Berlin Grand Hyatt 3 times and loved it for the club lounge and rooftop pool(unique in Berlin). It was stark modern in the late 90's but the last time I stayed in 2005 I found it to be less striking especially for over $400 a night. In fact we moved to a large grand suite (a luxury apartment) at the Mandala hotel for $300 a night during two separate trips. It's just a block away from the Hyatt and it is right across the street from the Sony center in Potsdamerplatz. I think this hotel has a great price/quality ratio. The only thing is there is no room service, though they will shop for all your groceries/drinks to fill up the empty fridge.

I am biased against the Ritz which is just behind the Sony center. I had a reservation there for $165 when they first opened but found the hotel to have an artificial Las Vegas glittery feeling that I decided against staying there. I much prefer its 4 star Marriott Berlin but that's just my preference.

We have booked the Grand Hyatt for about $300 a night, although I realized after the fact that I could have gotten it for less off a website discounter, or at least used that information to bargain directly with Hyatt for a lower price. Oh well...

I decided that a pool in August would be a huge plus, and while the location was not the type of neighborhood I initially wanted, I decided that it is very central to everything we will be doing and good transporation options.

I broke my rule about booking in chain hotels for this, so I"m hoping I'll be happy! We will be coming from a week and a half of staying in small hotels in old town centers, so I think the modern hotel style and the hubbub of Potsdamer Platz will be a nice contrast.

Skatedancer: That's a very good price for the Berlin Hyatt. Would you mind posting the website discounter for Hyatt?

The room size and design vary slightly according to location. We usually prefer rooms facing out toward the sunny southern side indeed give you a nice modern contrast to all the small town ambiance, but I think the rooftop pool & spa service will be your oasis.

I got that price directly off the hotel website. a while afterwards, I thought to look it up on other places, and I really can't remember which sites it was on, but there were a few.

Hands down, the Adlon. I have stayed there several times and was never, ever disappointed. One of my favorite hotels in the world. I am a luxury b&b owner, and have been in the hotel design industry for most of my career. The Adlon is one of the best city hotels I know, if not the best.
