Berlin and Prague - how long in each city?

I am considering a visit to Berlin and Prague this summer.
Having never been to ether, I would appreciate some input on the time needed to visit the attractions in each city.
Would 6 days in Berlin and 4 in Prague be a good mix?
I am interested in museums, galleries, modern and classical architecture, history etc. .
Markets and shopping are low on my list.

With that amount of time you could do the basics with one day trip from Prague and one or two from Berlin.

Sorry - in Prague do plan on enjoying some of the musical offerings (you can get a lot of info in the town hall). There's a huge selection and the prices are very low - plus many events take place in a variety of historic venues - including churches.

The palaces and parks and gardens in Potsdam are a typical day trip from Berlin (just 30min by train).
You should reserve one full day for it.

The two cities are very different, but very enjoyable in their own ways. You'll get lots of history, architecture old and new, and some world class museums.

I think the time you have allocated should be just about right, especially if you wish to do a day trip in Prague. Otherwise, I think 3 days will get you a good picture of Prague. In fact, you could spend 3 days in Prague and one night in Dresden on the way to Berlin (I think you can do that by train, if you're considering that mode of transportation). Berlin will easily eat up 6 days - or even more!

thanks again for very helpful info.

I also think your idea of 6 + 4 is just about right. There is more than enough to do in Berlin for 6 days, with your interests, without even thinking about day trips. If I were to change it at all, I'd change it to 7 + 3.

Here's a link to my Berlin trip reports, in case it's helpful - http://www.fodors.com/forums/threads...p;tid=34614269

I went to Prague before I got into trip reports :-)

I have a trip file on Prague; if you'd like to have it, email me at

I think 4 days for Prague is good, without a daytrip. On my first visit I ran out of time before I ran out of thing to do and see.

Hi, danon -

I agree that 6 days for Berlin and 4 days for Prague is a good split given your interests, and I second the recommendation for Potsdam.

Enjoy!
