Berlin & Leipzig

We're planning a trip to Berlin in the next few months. I would also like to visit Leipzig, but am uncertain whether this should be a day-trip or if we should plan to stay overnight there.

For most a day trip would suffice IMO - i just did one from Berlin and for the average tourist there's not that much to see.

That said Leipzig can be a fascinating town, especially for classical music buffs so you could spend days there.

We spent two days and a night and found plenty to do. Really enjoyed it, but agree that it could be done in a day trip.

Leipzig makes a great base as nearby are such gems as: Weimar, Eisenach & Watrburg Castle where Martin Luther saw the Devil and ink stains still on the wall after he threw his ink well at it; Naumberg and Erfurt - all super nice places to day trip to and return to vibrant Leipzig at night.

The Leipzig train station is a sight in itself - once the largest in Europe it still revels in its size and classical train shed architecture.

Leipzig at dusk looks incredibly fantastic as the old town is lit by the streetlights and the glitzy reflection from the polished cobblestones. The restaurant row at Barfuessgaetschen comes alive only at night. I think Leipzig looks different at night so I would recommend staying overnight to get Leipzig entirely.
