Berlin accommodation

This is a tentative foray as we're not planning on going till next year (around August), but we are a couple planning to stay a week (or more?) in Berlin. We've not been there before, but have been told by friends that the place to be , for interest and "character", is in either Friedericshain or Kreutzberg. Do people here agree? Any other suggestions? What moderately-priced hotel or apartment options can people recommend in these areas? We like history, art, walking, experiencing the local cafe and bar culture, and just generally blending in with the locals. Accommodation-wise our requirements are basic - so long as it's clean, comfortable and friendly we're happy.

We are just about to stay in that area in August, in the Köpenicker Strasse. It wasn't our first choice as we thought somewhere quieter would suit us better, but we now have a nice-looking apartment there - we basically just ran out of time, missed out on some of the properties that we liked and had to make a commitment somewhere not too far from the area where I will be visiting a library. I don't really know the area but by the looks of it, the area is very busy with restaurants and nightclubs, but is also residential. Kreuzberg is also the Turkish quarter in Berlin. The Köpenicker Strasse is well-connected by u-bahn and is near the Berlin Ostbahnhof. The address of the agency that has our apartment is . We actually found the apartment through a search engine, but the agency has several apartments in the same street. Good luck!
