Berlin accommodation
We (a couple) will be in Berlin in late August/early September for about 3/4 nights as part of independent touring around Germany and Austria. Have heard that we really need to book accommodation for Berlin. Any recommendations, bearing in mind that we are Aussies and our dollar is pretty low, ie we would be looking at B&B or pension accommodation, not 4 star hotels. Also need parking as we will have a hire car. Have done lots of web searching and am totally overwhelmed. Also have looked at Lonely Planet, Blue Guide and Rick Steves books. Your thoughts? Thanks for all your tips, and love reading everyone's posts.

Jo

Last year we lodged at the Holiday Inn Garden Court Kurfuerstendamm. Located on a quiet street just off Kudam we found it to be comfortable and close to the centre of town (10 minute walk to Kaiser Wilhelm Church and 3 minutes to the closest metro station)

We paid around 60 pounds per night. Find details of the hotel at:-

http://www.basshotels.com/holiday-inn

Rob

Thanks for the tip Rob, but think this is a bit pricey - by my calculations it works out at about DM190 per night. Would prefer something more "homely" and cheaper!!! However will check out the website - thanks again.
Jo

While I stayed with friends in Berlin, I used nethotels.com for Vienna and it was great. They have Berlin on their web site and I would recommend using them for both hotels/pensions and events. You will really enjoy Berlin--what an incredible city.

Fodors

I'm a long-term fan of the Hotel Crystal, Kantstrasse 144, 10623 Berlkin, phone 030 312 90 47 or 48, fax 030 312 64 65. A double is 100 US dollars a night, with a good breakfast. The staff speak perfect English and are enthusiasts for Berlin, keen to tell you how to reach places and events. The hotel is 200 yards from Savignyplatz S-Bahn (elevated railway) station. To reach it from Zoo station you go one stop west, drop by lift (not stairs) to Bleibtreustrasse, leave the lift, cross the road, turn left (or north), walk 100 meters to Kntstrasse and turn right (or east), walk 100 yards and you're at the hotel.

he website is http://berlin.hotelguide.net/data/h100066.htm/.

Please write if I can help further.

Ben Haines, London
