Berlin/5* Hotel Convenient to Shops
 

I am going to have one day in Berlin (arriving early Saturday morning; leaving early Sunday morning). While there I'd like to hit the stores. Which of the 5* hotels would be most convenient for a shopping expedition? Thanks!

Which stores (type) are you most interested in as that could make a difference.

Given the amount of time, probably a couple of the big high end department stores.

Swissotel has a good location - it's one block off the Ku'damm and is close to KaDeWe and several U-Bahn lines. However, it may only be 4 stars?

That seems a wasted opportunity to me -having a day in a fascinating place like Berlin, and just going shopping ?

When we were looking at hotels last summer, the Savoy had a really good internet deal going [www.hotels.de I think] and it is very central to the shops.Can't get more 5* than that!

The Adlon is the best.

The Regent on Gendarmenmarkt in Mitte enjoys an excellent reputation and is not as crowded as the Adlon, also in Mitte and not a bad hotel either, as mentioned before. The Regent is the former Four Seasons. They gave up their management contract as it was a bit difficult for them to run the hotel at a profit. Regent is the luxury division of Rezidor Hotels, which operate the European and International properties of SAS Radisson Hotels. Apparently they are doing a pretty good job and the number of celebrities staying at the Berlin Regent is considerable.

In the <b>West</b>, I would second the suggestion of looking into the Swissotel, which is conveniently located to upscale shopping around Kurfuerstendamm and also to Germany's grandest department store KaDeWe, operated by Karstadt. The Regent and the Adlon would be more luxurious, though.

Another option might be Brandenburger Hof, a small luxury boutique hotel in a swank side-street of Ku'damm.

And finally, I cannot comment on the quality of the site capote recommended here. But capote has only contributed to a handful of threads here recommending that particular site. This reeks of advertising (which is banned around here), suggests he/she has a commercial interest and the information should thus be taken with some caution. Finally, this site was being pushed a few weeks ago here by a poster under a different screen name, who has been banned, as it appears on the grounds of advertising.

I would have to agree with hsv if your primary purpose is to shop, the Regent is the best 5 star closest to Friedrichstr Gallerie Lafayette with the underground connection to the &quot;Department Store&quot; in Quartier 506. FYI, my wife and other ladies mentioned that shopping for clothing in Berlin is not great at all, and the G. Lafayette is too small. Berlin is good for me as I only shopped for books, music &amp; wines. There are a few high end designer shops along Friedrichstr as well, but Kurfurstendamm has a ton more west of Uhlandstr while east of Uhland you'll find Kadewe, Peek &amp; Cloppenburg, Wertheim dept stores. The Swissotel is probably the best bet for Ku'dam area but it's not the old world you're looking for. You will like the Regent old world interior (&amp; bedroom) as it was a Four Season's flagship hotel, the modern exterior is misleading.

The Adlon is a great hotel for seeing the the Brandenburg gate and the Jewish Holocaust memorial but quite a walk to Friedrichstr shops or the Arkade indoor mall at Potsdamerplatz. Depending on chance/luck, hailing a taxi in Berlin can be difficult at times unless you're at the hotel/ Taxi charges are quite reasonable in Berlin.

As it turns out, I'll be going to Vienna instead of Berlin. At first I had hoped that the business class fares would have kicked in by now. The plan was to fly directly to Berlin and take the train to Leipzig. I ended up travelling about 2 weeks too early, refused to spend 9 hours in coach on a CO 757, so opted to go through Vienna. I agree, though, I would have ended up at The Regent.

Well Vienna is just as nice though you've been there before from what you've mentioned. So you probably know that the shopping street Mariahilferstr is where the locals find their department stores, not in old town.
