berlin, 5 days, 70 yearold traveling solo
First time in Berlin, though a seasoned traveler, staying in upscale Mitte Hotel, Planning to take one walking tour, one bus ride on the # 100, possibly get a tkt to the opera, one day in Postdam
should I go to Dresden,
What else is a must-do and see. I'll probably never get back to Berlin again. HELP!!!

Depending on your sensibilities, the Checkpoint Charlie Museum is very interesting IMO;
shopping? the KaDeWe, particularly the food hall
the Kaiser Wilhelm church near the zoo
Re Potsdam...I suspect you are going to see the Sans Souci which some seem to enjoy more than the Nieuw Palace which is also of interest and worth it IMO but if you have enough time

We visited Berlin this year in May (this was our second visit, the first was 30 years ago..). We love this city. As you, we stayed also 5 days.
Be aware that it is very large (its area is 9 times more than Paris). However, the public transportation is very good. We bought daily tickets and this was the best option for us.
I would recommend the following:
- Museumsinsel (Museum Island), where the most outstanding museums of eastern Berlin, including the Pergamon Museum, are situated.
- A short walk away is the restored Nikolaiviertel (Nikolai Quarter), a neighborhood of bars, restaurants, and shops that evoke life in the prewar days.
- The Wall-- the government has reconstructed a partial stretch of the wall at Bernauer Strasse and Ackerstrasse . The 70m-long (230-ft.) memorial consists of two walls that include some of the fragments of the original wall (those fragments not bulldozed away or carried off by souvenir hunters). The memorial is mostly made of mirrorlike stainless steel. Slits allow visitors to peer through. A steel plaque reads "In memory of the division of the city from 13 August 1961 to 9 November 1989."
By the way, we saw this wall as part of a walking tour - The third Reich.
Another tour that we took was the Red Berlin.
Both these tours were of "The new Berlin Free Tour " company - we took them from Brandenburg Gate. Each tour was of 3 1/2 hours. They were conducted by American students that study in Berlin. The guides were very good. Please note that you should have good walking shoes; the tours are not so easy, most of the people who participate are young, and ...they walk fast!
- Charlottenburg Palace and its museums
- Strolling along Unter den Linden and the Kurfürstendamm and admire the beautiful buildings, museums and churches.
- Potsdamerplatz - the most modern part of the city
We re-visited Potsdam - Sans Souci, New Palace, and walked from San Souci to Orangerie and to Chinese Pavilion. This was a full day trip from Berlin.
We visited Dresden only 30 years ago, and we have beautiful memories about it and its museums.

Another "must see" for Berlin is the famous bust of Queen Nefertiti. She used to be in the Egyptian Museum, but I understand that she has been moved... check it out.
As someone mentioned earlier, the Alter of Pergamon and the Ishtar Gate at the Pergamon Museum is not to be missed.
Then there's the Reichtag and the Wannsee Conference House... how much time do you have?
