Bergen Restaurant Recommendations?

Hi Everybody,
We are making a short trip to Bergen for a family reunion in September and my wife's birthday will fall on the day before we return home. We will probably be treating our hosts, her cousin & husband, so it will be four meals rather than two. Does anyone have a nice restaurant to suggest for dinner that won't break the bank?

....that won't break the bank?

Vic: We found that to be a tall order in beautiful Bergen...we spent three days there a few years ago en route north...enjoyed the variety of seafood fare at the open harbor market....shrimp sandwiches and plates, etc..at less than atmospheric prices...we did find a nice little place for a "proper" sit down dinner (aside from a mediocre Chinese spot)...it's not far from the harbor, near the Floibannen, on King Oscar Gate.."Vangbunnens"..good selection and prices...small place, good service.

On the market, we bought a piece of raw whale meat and munched it on the way.

I would never buy it again - it tastes dreadful.

correction: astronomical prices..big bucks!

Trav: It's on the menu of every sushi bar in Greenland...evidently, one must have an acquired taste to appreciate a chunk. Needs a bit of soy sauce and wasabi.Pass the blubber, bro!

tower, thanks for the suggestion. I've also checked on Tripadvisor too, but to no avail. I'm beginning to think there is no solution in sight. Four people would probably end up costing US$300+. We may just wait until we get to Stockholm the next day (her actual birthday) and celebrate it there - just the two of us.

Bergen is a beautiful town, a good place for a birthday. While Scandinavia is expensive, I'm sure you can find somewhere special. If the cousin is local, I'd ask the cousin for recommendations. There are some smaller towns nearby and I bet the locals eat somewhere besides the tourist-oriented dining in Bergen. We ate at the Bergen restaurants along the water with all of the other tourists, and it's wasn't cheap.

vic....four of us had a fine dinner at Vangbunnens and I just checked my journal...total cost in USD was $92, full dinners and desserts, two glasses of wine for the wine drinkers.
Your prices in Stockholm will come very close to Bergens. Hope something works out for you....and advanced happy birthday to wife.

O.K., I'll check out Vangbunnens with the relatives. Thanks for the tip. BTW, how long ago were you there, tower?
