Bergen Hotel -- near Port ?

We will (sadly) only have one night in Bergen at the end of our Viking Cruise. We will leave for the Nutshell travel to Oslo the following morning. Doesn't have to fancy, but would love it to be in a great walking area and just want to make this quick transfer easy.

We're thinking that somewhere near the port would be good... but I can't find exactly where that is. OR... somewhere near where the bus leaves for the Nutshell trip would work well also.

Small and charming or Big with a pleasant view... either will do... but want the price to be moderate (about $150 US ) . Thoughts??

We stayed at the "First Hotel Marin" a decade ago and liked it. Location is great, near the Bryggen. But I saw that some reviewers on TripAdvisor complained that it needs some update. Perhaps choose a higher-rated hotel in the same vicinity?

I do not know where the buses for the Nutshell trip leave, but Bergen's Tourist Information office is housed in a long skinny modern building next to the outdoor fish market. You can always walk to the TI office to get more info.

Don't you mean a train from Bergen for the first leg of NIN?
I have never done the NIN but I thought it involved the train to/from Bergen.
We too stayed at the First Marin, in a room overlooking teh Brygge.
It is a long walk from the port, but doable even with luggage - we walked to the Hurtigruten port with luggage from there, but you may prefer a taxi to get you there, depending on how much luggage you have.

The other hotel we used was on Hakonsgarten, though I don't remember the name - we stayed there of the Hurtigriten and wlaked up to get the FlyBuss the following day.
The Radisson Blu and the Thon Orion on the Brygge are probably in your price range.
You can walk to the station, or the bus station from any of the hotels near the Brygge.

I did NIN trip in June and loved it. Bergen is delightful. And walkable. And small.

Stayed at the Klosterhagen, formerly part of an old monastery. The breakfast was the most incredible I have ever seen or eaten. They work with a group so that everything is gown, harvested and made by this group--breads, jams, etc. Room was lovely as well. 5 Stars, 10 out of 10, great!

Depending on the time of year, you actually take the train out of Bergen unless you are in the season and you opt for the ferry. Station is about 1/4 mile from hotel and I only travel with 1 wheeled carryon.

First of all... you are so right! It leaves Bergen by rain, then there is a bus to the ferry!

Thanks for info on hotels. First Hotel Marin looks good and in our price range... first thought they were booked... but they have rooms at their own website.

QUESTION about the MARIN... some rooms have harbor views... but by the map, they seem a bit away?? Did any of you have a harbor view, and was it worth it, or just a little distant slice of the harbor??

jan47... the Klosterhagen is booked except for a couple of single rooms!! I don't know what's happening on August 12 but I'm not going to wait and will book the Marin tonight-- at least as a placeholder!!

Thanks much to you all.

I had a harbour view room. It is right on the harbour. The entrance to the hotel is on the street behind, then you go through the more modern part of the hotel to the older art with the harbour views.
Only you can decide if it is worth the extra money but our room was quite spacious by Norwegian standards as well as having the view.

Depending on which quay your cruise arrives at it is probably worth getting a taxi if you have anything heavy by way of luggage, or if it is raining, which it does a lot in Bergen. We each had one mid sized roller duffel filled with heavy winter clothing, and it was quite a tiring walk to the Hurtigruten quay. Your ship could be slightly closer to the hotel, or quite a bit further away.

Have a great trip!

Well, well, well. Since last night, First Marin Hotel is completely booked, even through its own website!! I just can't figure out what's happening that night... for many of the hotels, they're booked that night, but not the nights before or after!!

Moving on....

Your cruise arrives in Bergen and many guest will be overnighting before flying home or heading off elsewhere.
Try the Thon Orion.

There are buses to a number of hotel sites from the quay where Hurtigruten docks.

Thanks all! Ended up with Thon Hotel Rosenkrantz... two of you recommended the Thon Orion, which led me to their own web site and through some quirk, was able to get the Rosenkrantz for less than the Orion (it's ever so slightly closer to the train station and is rated #1 on TA.)

I love that they have a light supper offered in the rates (I think both do) which means we can have a nice lunch out, then just a little snack at the hotel to save $$.

As always, thanks to all.
