Belorussia

Anyone been?

Somebody May 31st, 2002 06:40 AM

Not many, at least. While Russia is shining it´s shield, Belorussia is stuck to dictatorship and yarns for communism. That does not make it a very attractive destination.

why go there when there are so many other areas of europe that are more welcoming and tourist friendly.

didn't belorussia shoot down a ballonist who had strayed over their territory a number of years ago?

Although I haven't been there yet (although I could see the border from a distance) try

www.InYourPocket.com

for some information--the only other guide with Belarus information is the Lonely Planet Guide to Russia, Ukraine and Belarus.

Several years ago, on a escorted tour of USSR, had an overnight stop in Minsk, the capital of Belarus. Just remember it as a huge, industrial city--can't think of anything outstanding, but since the fall of the Wall and Communism, would love to return to take a closer look.

Geri! Communism has not fallen in Belorussia. And the country is governed by dictator Lukashenko. Local people "disappear" there every day, artists, journalits, writers and so on.
