Itinerary Help

Hi!

I'm visiting greece for the 1st time this june and planning this trip has been so overwhelming! So many islands to chose from and we have finally finalized on Mykonos, santorini, create and milos. I just need to confirm if this is the best ferry route to take

Athens - Mykonos
mykonos -- milos
milos to santorini
santori to crete
crete to athens

Thanks in advance, guys

Best,
Su

That's the most logical sequence, but I wouldn't want to do the link between Mykonos and Milos on the smallest ferry in the Cyclades, SeaJet 2. The ferry usually runs 1-2 hours late by the time it reaches Milos, and is a nightmare in rough seas. Even if you don't get seasick other passengers will. The full route for SeaJet 2, as shown on gtp.gr, is: PIRAEUS - SIFNOS - MILOS - FOLEGANDROS - IOS - SANTORINI - NAXOS - MYKONOS - NAXOS - KOUFONISSI - KATAPOLA - SANTORINI - FOLEGANDROS - MILOS - SIFNOS - PIRAEUS

SeaJet 2 stops at Santorini on the way from Mykonos to Milos anyway. It would be possible to take a larger ferry from Mykonos to Santorini, then switch to another ferry at Santorini, and that may even get you to Milos faster. Unlike SeaJet 2, most ferries make only one stop between Mykonos and Santorini.

The problem with your itinerary is that it takes you off the main ferry routes on some of the legs, which are served in summer by catamarans, not conventional ferries. Most of the cats are okay, but SeaJet 2 and Superjet are only 41m in length. I hope you have at least three weeks for this trip.

That's a lot of destinations. How long are you going for? Don't forget getting from island to island is time consuming which eats into your holiday.

If you are going, as Heimdall asked for three weeks, it may work but it will still involve lots of travel time.

You may want to consider less islands, especially Crete which will be the furthest island to get to. Flying is the quickest way, a ferry will take at least 9 hours plus the time to get from Crete to your next destination.

Crete is a large island deserving a number of days, if not more to appreciate.

The other islands are smaller and can be enjoyed in 2-3 days each.

Santorini & Mykonos are the two most popular and touristed island. You may to eliminate Mykonos.

Athens is worthy of at least 3 days to really see what it has to offer.

Even though islands look close on maps some of them are rather far from the mainland and each other.

Hi,

Apologies for the delay in reply. Unfortunately we have 2 weeks for this trip.(June 1st - 14th)

@Heimdall - Can you please suggest the best route to take? And the best mode of transport as well?

@crazyh - We are open to taking 1 or 2 flights. Can you suggest the islands to and from where it would make more sense to take a flight?

Best,
Su

Actually what I would suggest is to drop at least one of those islands. Two weeks is enough time for only three islands, especially if you include Crete, which could easily take up two weeks on its own.

All the islands on your list have airports with flights to/from Athens. None have inter-island flights. Therefore to save time you could fly from Athens to your first island and back to Athens from the last.

The islands you have chosen are all on different main ferry routes, so you will most likely end up using catamarans instead of conventional ferries. Catamarans are about twice the price of conventional ferries, and the smaller ones, e.g. SeaJet 2 and Superjet, are vomit comets in rough seas.
