Belgium from Paris
Is this a feasible day trip? Please advise.

What is the best way of doing so? I have never travelled around Paris, only S. France. Would we buy train passes prior to our trip, or once we arrive? I am unsure how to find information on train schedules, etc.

My daughter and I took the Paris Vision trip to Brugge a couple of weeks ago, and I recommend it highly. You have to be at the office on Rue Rivoli at 7:15 AM, and you don't get back until 8:30 PM, but the beautiful coach ride through the countryside with many medieval cathedrals and through the Somme River valley (WWI) was very interesting and relaxing, the tour guides were excellent, a boat tour on the canals in Brugge was delightful, and you have more than 3 hours to eat lunch, explore, and shop for chocolate and lace on your own. Yes, it's a feasible day trip but don't drive. A trip to Brugge by car, for example, would take at least twice as long as the train and it's much more stressful and tiring (you don't want to drive for several hours back to Paris after a long day of sightseeing!!). Either take the train or the Paris Vision trip Knoble recommended. Brugge would be a delightful day trip, but pick a week-day--it's tourist season now and Brugge is MOBBED on week-ends (we were there on Saturday to meet up with some friends and you could barely walk down some streets for the crowds). If you visit only one museum in Brugge, I would recommend the Groeninge.
Shopping tip: for women who would like to buy one of those beautiful Delvaux bags but shudder at the price ($700 and up), there is a little store called Secondo behind the Crowne Plaza in Brugge that specializes in selling second hand Delvaux bags. They are all in excellent condition, some almost brand new, are certified as being real Delvaux (no fakes) and cost about one-fourth the original purchase price. BTilke (Brussels) |
