Beer in Paris?
 

Hi everyone,

I'm a pretty big beer drinker and was wondering if there are any cool breweries or bars (not lounges or clubs) to check out for someone who doesn't speak any French. I'll be in France for about 9 days and have planned a long itinerary which covers mostly daytime activities. It'd be great to get a feel for some of the nightlife in Paris while I'm there. I'll mostly be in the 9th arrondissement.

Not looking to go out and get crazy, but just some cool fun bars to meet other travelers or native English speakers.

You're not going to find the exact thing you have in mind, or exactly as you have in your home country - that's a major point of travel I find - but to get you started, try:

Academie de la Biere - Blvd Porte de Royale (a big nod to the Belgians here, which can only be a good thing where beer is concerned, recommend the Westmalle Triple).
Frog et Rosbif - they are scatters all over Paris (and France), but there's one on rue St Denis, not far from Chatelet Metro station or St Germain des Prix or the Trocadero; it's an English pub, hence the name, and you'll certainly find English speakers there, plus they brew their own beers.
Au Trappiste - rue St Denis, also near Chatelet Metro(another nod to the Belgians here, far too many beers to list here).

There are also some great Brasserie you'll just wander past on your day time travels, so make note of one that you like the look of and go back. There are great little proper French bars dotted in the streets leading from Pigalle up the hill to Montmatre(aim for behind Moulin Rouge and up to Rue Norvins, you'll find the stairs and side streets with all different types of bars) but be very aware of anyone in that area offering you free drinks if you go in their club/bar, it may be free to get in but it won't be free to get out!

You may find beer to be a little more expensive in Paris than expected, so just be aware of it and have a 1664 for me (then continue with the better beers!).

There are some good pubs around rue Mouffetard where you'll meet some English speakers (they seem to be English and Irish expats around there). Actually, there are several big pubs/cafes around place Contrescarpe in that area (Latin Qtr) where you'll meet lots of people. The Irish pub I'm thinking of is called Connolly's Corner and is on rue Mirbel at the corner of rue Patriarches. FYI http://www.spottedbylocals.com/paris...ner-irish-pub/

Now over in the 9th where I've stayed several times, there are some real laid-back cafes with a lot of younger people on place Toudouze (just north of the metro stop St Georges), that will be very convenient for you. They are pretty friendly over there. I'm sure some might speak English, but it's not tourist central in that neighborhood. IN fact that entire neighborhood has a lot of students/younger people so I think you'll find plenty to do just wandering around there and some of the streets with bars on them might be rue Blanche and rue de Clichy.

Also, glad to hear there's a decent pub scene around the 9th. The places you suggested Christina are all right next to our hotel, so that's perfect!

Do you mean this one, Denise? It's on the Quai des Grands Augustins. We didn't go inside, but I remember it because my husband took a picture of the door (it has hockey sticks for handles).

For the OP, it looks like the beer selections might be pretty slim, though.

Been there, Right on the road beside the Seine, west of St Michel. The owner was giving me scotches, so never noticed the beer selection. Good place to unwind.

My personal favorite is Au Trappiste, but I am more interested in the food there than the beer.

There are several beer bars across from the Gare du Nord, where they know that a lot of beer lovers arrive.
