Been to Cinque Terre in January?

Hi everyone,
We'll probably be going to Italy in January to visit the in-laws and I am thinking about spending 2-3 days in CT. Hiking, eating and enjoying panoramas are all high on my list. I don't mind cool/cold temps but was curious if that's typically a rainy/foggy time. Anyone with experience?
Thanks.

A few years ago I had a relative stay there and he said it was awful, cold, chilly, windy, rainy etc. Have not experienced CT myself in January but from what I heard I would not be interested. Do not think you would have muchWould your in-laws in Italy be able to give you advise??

good grief, I was editing my message and somehow my message "went through" Sorry! Anyway, from what I have heard I do not think you would enjoy to much outdoor time. But maybe your Italian in-laws could advise you better.

I was in cinque terre last December for 2 nights. It wasn't that cold although it did rain a lot. The area is beautiful, but it is quiet at that time of year (which some people think is great). However, if I had my choices I would have done it in warmer months since it is a coastal town after all and I am sure is a different experience when you can swim/suntan and don't have rain every day.

Most of the hotels in that area close at the end of October.

OK, thanks for your thoughts. My inlaws have never been there and the closest relatives live in Siena so...
It doesn't sound too promising, though. What about Sardinia?

I have been there with family friends over the Christmas and New Year's holidays for the past 2 years, staying until mid-January. The weather is chilly, often cold and rainy, but not unbearably so. We walked from Riomaggiore to Manarola on the Via Dell'More in a light rain/mist, temps in the 50s. There were a couple days of brilliant sunshine interspersed. It never gets cold enough to snow, although the temps do drop at night. I don't think you should avoid the area altogether, it is certainly not sun-tan weather but what is in January anyway? We usually go even to Lucca for a couple days and I have found the temps there even colder than the CT - I think the coast has a more temperate, mild climate with less extremes than the "hinterland" and inland areas.
