Bed sizes in London
 

My searches aren't finding many hotel choices that offer anything larger than "double" size beds. It's occurred to me that perhaps these aren't as small as "double" size beds here in the US (54" wide, I think?)

Yes, their doubles are the same as our doubles. Queen and king size beds are much less popular in europe - and typically you have to go for an upscale hotel or an upgraded room ( that specifies queen or king) to get one. You can also try american chain hotels, which are more likely - but not guaranteed - to have something bigger than a doulbe.

In the UK a normal double is 4'6" (54")

A king is 5' (60")

Double beds are the standard in most B&Bs and hotels. Sometimes you will find a larger bed that is two singles than can be zipped together or apart for flexibility.

A lot of hotel websites mention "double" for the bed type, when this means 1 bed for 2 persons. At first, I thought this meant the same as the US's "full size/double" bed. Then, I found a website (Sam's Club Travel Club - no longer in business) that broke down the hotel's bed size by Full, Queen, etc.

In the US a double bed is 54", a queen sized bed is 60" X 80" and a king size bed is 76" X 80". I have seen a real king sized bed in only one or two very upscale hotels in Europe - mostly what they call a king is really a queen size bed.
