Bed & Breakfasts
We are planning a 12 day driving trip starting out in Stuttgart and maybe going to Lake Constance,Ulm,Regenburg,Strasburg,Passau, Salzburg/Hallstatt,Innsburk,St.Gallen and back to Stuttgart. Has anyone stayed in B&B's or quaint places in these cities?

I've been in most of those cities but always used 2* hotels. For B&Bs I recommend that you google with the name of the city plus B&B, and look for individual B&B web sites rather than the commercial booking sites. |
We used this chain of hotels when we travelled through Germany and Austria a few years back. They are full of character and not too expensive and usually in quiet places. You may find some near your planned route. The web-site is only partly in English

Try googling "Ferienwohnung" and the name of a town and see what you come up with.
A Ferienwohnung is a fully equipped self-catering holiday apartment for two to six people, and I stay in them exclusively when in Germany. Their prices and standards are regulated by the government and rarely cost more than 25 Euros a night per person. You must however stay a minimum of three nights, so that may not suit your itinerary. Since you mentioned Passau here is one example of what you can find there via Google. The site is at <www.passau-pension.de> and lists five Ferienwohnungs at prices around 35 Euros for two people, and a number of pensions and private rooms, all of them centrally located. The latter may be of more interest to you. While the site is in German, the people you will talk to when you telephone will speak reasonable English. As Hopscotch says, you are better dealing directly with the management via sites like this than going through commercial booking sites. Harzer |
Karen Brown's book Inns and Itineraries for Germany lists many B7Bs in those areas. Her website lists some of her suggestions. www.karenbrown.com
