For Bev re Montreux vs Vevey. I *love* both places and will try not to offend anyone with this description:

Vevey has more local soul and feels more classic Swiss. Has more & better bakeries, local cafes, for example. A much bigger well attended (by vendors and shoppers both) open air market on Saturdays.

Montreux an international feel, more visible foreign residents and tourists both. And yes different along the quai and main street (busier) as compared to up in the historic old town (quiet local).

I have friends who live in each place, so I am fortunately to see it from a local perspective.
