Bed & Breakfast/guest houses

We will be traveling in late spring to Germany-following the Rhine River in a rental car. I have been having trouble locating out of the way/small pensions, B&B's,or guest houses in which to stay. We are interested in meeting the people-not other tourists. We do not like nor require lavish accomodations as the hotels offer. We plan also to visit Vienna, perhaps Prague and at least one concentration camp and return from Munich. If anyone can help with names of places and email addresses, I would be most appreciative. I own a B&B and have had several guests from Europe. It was wonderful to share in their lives.

The following website has quite a number of listings; I think most of the pages are in German, but you'll get an idea, I think: www.bed-and-breakfast-inns.net/

What towns were you considering? I keep a file of tourist office listings for private accommodations along the Rhine which I'd be happy to share with you.

RICK STEVES!

You have to get his book. He has one specifically on Germany/Austria/Switzerland. Here is his web site http://www.ricksteves.com/

In 1999 my sister & I did the very thing you are wanting to do (we used my brother-in-law's car though). We found that whenever we strayed from his book we went wrong.

We went as far up as Bacharach, but spent most of our time in Bavaria. That is where I can't wait to go back to.

Email me if I can be any help to you.

I can suggest only one that we have used and it is Pension Lette in Bacharach. Great little place, nice owner, speaks perfect English, and will give you nice custom cooked breakfast.

diana,
we are a family of five that went to germany in july of 2000. we stayed in a wonderfulgerman house in the town of langenlonsheim. this ia about 70 km out side of frankfurt and 7 km outside of bingen. the house owners live next door and are wonderful. the house is three stories and had beds for 5 people.(all full size). the house has a new kitchen,2 bathrooms, and accomodated us very well.we took the rhine cruise out of bingen and also went sightseeing all up and down the rhine.we used this town as home base and traveled to
munich, france, and luxenburg.the total cost of our stay in the home for nine nights was 1120 dm.(approx. $ 550.00).
you can look up the house at vacationvillas.net under the rheinland/palatinate section in germany.
we would not hesitate to stay here again as this was a great way to be in a small town and the owners(the leiners) were very helpful and spoke english.

The website www.about.com is occasionally a good place to turn for one thing or another when planning a trip. They list the following B&B choices in Germany:

http://www.gogermany.about.com/trave.../aa090600l.htm

But there are so many good choices - - I would recommend picking some towns that appeal to you, then consult www.townname.de (i.e., out the name of the town into a URL that ends in .de - - like www.oberkirch.de or www.schonach.de just to name two)

You are almost sure to find some neat Gasthaus or Gasthof selections.

"Unterkunft", by the way, is where you will find listings of "Accommodations".

Best wishes,

Rex

Buy the Karen Brown book "German Inns and Itineraries." She does an entire series on B and B's. We have used her recommendations all over Europe and they have been very good.

Diana,
Check the following website:
http://www.reisen-mit-preisen.de/rmp...sh/framee.html

Scroll to an area of Germany or enter a town name and you'll get a list of the smaller inns, gasthausen and pensions in the town; you can then check amenities, costs and availability. The site is in English.
