Hi John
Never heard of Besancon, on the map, it looks like a big city. We have been to Beaune and it was a terrific one day stop. There is Hotel Dieu (dating to 1443 ut us a Flemish/gothic charity hospital that was really interesting to tour. The old city is very quaint and easy to walk around within the wall. There is also a variety of small shops, good restaurants and Marche aux Vins for wine tasting.
We really enjoyed our visit.

Bonjour John,

I highly recommend Beaune, it is the heart and center of the Burgundy wine region. The Côte de Nuit to the north and the Côte de Beaune to the south, repectively Reds (Pinot Noir) and Whites (Chardonnay).

The last three times we've driven from the south back to Paris we stayed at Hotel le Cep in the center of Beaune. A wonderful hotel with an excellent restaurant, unfortunately, it's on the expensive side, 1200 - 1400 FF for one of the nicer rooms. It is a nice oasis on the long drive from the south back to Paris.

Stop by the tourist office just next to the Hôtel Dieu, and if you have time you can take a tour through the vinyards.

Ciao,

Randy
