Beaune - hubby 40th - restaurants
 

Suprising my husband with a weekend in Beaune for his 40th (sans enfants!!) in early Feb. We are staying at Hotel le Cep after reading high recommendations on this site. I am looking for a very nice restaurant for Saturday evening in the town of Beaune...want to be able to drink wine and not have to worry about driving...recommendations?? Also, looking for restaurant recommendations for Sunday lunch on drive back to Geneva...preferably somewhere in vineyards...at a chataux maybe...suggestions???

We had a delicious lunch at Ma Cuisine and a fabulous dinner at le Petit Paradis. The Charolais beef with epoisse (local cheese) sauce was delicious. We'd highly recommend both of these restaurants.

I can recommend two very different restaurants in Beaune
Le Jardin des Remparts - 10, rue de l'Hôtel-Dieu 21200 BEAUNE
Try the degustation menu for a very special, formal meal in a traditional restaurant. Have coffee and dessert on the terrace.
Ma Cuisine - Passage Sainte-Hélène 2120 Beaune France Tel. +33 380 223 022 Fax. +33 380 249 979
A tiny restaurant with more bistro-type food but still very inventive. They have an unusually extensive wine list if that is important. This is one of those places that foodies go to.
Check for openings as sometimes there are closings in February at restaurants.
Reservations a good idea for a Saturday.

My husband and I stayed at Hotel Le Cep in Beaune several years ago. We had dinner in a restaurant about two doors away from entrance to Hotel. Unfortunately, I cannot remember the name of restaurant. We ordered the traditional Beef Bourguignon but found the beef grizzly...is that the word I'm looking for? It was a pleasant restaurant and you don't have to worry about drinking and driving.

Well, I think if they were going to make the stew with bear meat instead of beef, they should have told you!

Ha! Ha! Poor choice of words. I guess I was thinking of gristle?

Thanks for all the suggestions so far. Several years ago, we stayed a night each in Beaune and Avalon. One evening we ate dinner in what I thought was an old monestery?...it was a beautiful cellar..cave type of restaurant..great atmosphere and great food...but I can't remember name and even if I was in Beaune or Avalon!! Anyone know this place...or is there a several like them in both towns!! Randy, it looks very similar to the restaurant you suggested, but I don't think it is the same place.

I just dug up my notes from that trip...it was in Beaune and it was an old abbey...cursing myself for not including the name of the restaurant...anyone know this? Does it still exist?

just had a look at the web-site of "le jardin des remparts" - very swish and very sutiable for a special treat. The degustation menu is 85e, though there are less expensive ones that also look good.

swissgirl - If you check out my Burgundy photos, pictures 67 - 72 are some of the dishes we had at Le Jardin des Remparts.
Funny that they all looked in focus when I took them - do you think that was the effect of the excellent wine? LOL

RobJame, those pictures are definitely convincing...the excellent wine is why I want to be able to walk back to hotel!!! By the way, the pictures of the Pommard restaurant looks fantastic as well!

The Caveau De La Grange in Pommard was one of those serendipity things. We were just driving around after a wonderful afternoon doing the wine tasting at Olivier LaFlaive (a wonderful experience if you ever have the time) and couldn't decide on what we wanted to do for dinner. (This seems to happen a couple of times on our trips and usually escalates to an all out battle between the two of us.) We finally grumpily decided on this place in Pommard and it was one of our favorite places in Burgundy. In the "cave" of the restaurant we had the €25 special - appetizer (escargot for me), beef bourgignon and wonderful dessert (Sandra had one of those molten chocolate desserts that she threatens to try to make every once and awhile). Add a bottle of Burgundy and we were speaking to each other again and remembering a special evening.

ira - it sure is the place and good for you for finding the url. I would recommend it.
The exact menu we had seems to be changed a bit, but looking at the selections doesn't it just make your mouth water? Add wine at €3 a glass - I pay more than that at Chillis

I was able to dig up the name of the abbey restaurant...it was called Abbey de Mazieres...anyone know if this place still exists and if any good still (or was it never any good,,,just lots of good wine!!!)

I don't know it but maybe it'll be your special find.
Someone makes this comment on the Rick Steeves site...
"We dined at the Abbaye de Mazieres and had the 23 euro menu. I recommend buying a bottle of their best wine(red or white), and order some cheese with bread to munch on while waiting for each of your courses. Plan on spending the rest of the evening in the cellar being served in courses along with the other ten to twelve tables."

Several years ago my husband and I rented a small stone farm house just outside Beaune for a summer. I would also recommend Ma Cuisine and Petit Paradis but add Le Gourmardin to the list as well. If you have a car and want to venture out a bit we loved Le Charlemagne in Pernand-Vergelesses, maybe 20 mins. or so away. (Oops, just read the part about not wanting to drive, oh well)Your husband is a lucky man!!!

Rob, Interesting post...I don't remember it being that long of an evening...our children were with us and they were only 6 and 8 at that time...can't imagine they would have dealt well with that!!!
