Beaune Bottle Battle: Château de Pommard vs. Caves Patriarche Père & Fils

I believe we will only have time for one of these two tours. If anyone has a recommendation of one over the other, it would be appreciated. Cheers!

Pommard is one of my favourite wines.
(no more in the cellar, and quite expensive to rebuild the stock).

Now I didn't visit either of these chateaux / cellars.
Just by the name, I'd avoid a cellar (might be reseller) and Chateau seems like a producer.

I may be totally wrong too, but it may give you angle for more research...

Burgundy has developed a system of négociants who are not only reseller but also owners of cellars where the wine is aged.

Depends on how much "tasting" you want to do! LOL!

Do you want to walk or drive? I know you folks love your vin!

Patriarche Père & Fils is a 10 minute walk from my hotel. I do plan on visiting Pommard also which is a 8-10 minute drive. But, I am staying in Beaune for 4 nights.

Ben oui, un négociant. un revendeur qui a une cave dans laquelle il laisse les vins mûrir.
Cela n'en fait toujours pas un producteur.

We had a great time visiting Patriarche Père & Fils and it is not a reseller, they sell their own wine.

It is a self guided tour in the cellars, very atmospheric and we had a lot of fun.

Pommard is also fantastic...can't go wrong!

We visited Pommard a couple of years ago; very enjoyable. They had a pop-art exhibition on in their small museum. It's was just our family and someone showed us around the cellars. We didn't book.
There was a small restaurant on the corner of the street where we had a pleasant lunch on the terrace.

We had a great time in Beaune but were overwhelmed with choice. We already knew and liked several different Burgundies, but the selection here is on a galactic scale. We wanted to buy a bottle for a wine enthusiast friend, but in the end gave up. We felt like we were in the Burgundy version of this movie scene: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VHIcmoY3_lE

We dined at Loiseau de Vignes because they had a huge selection of Burgundy wines available by the glass, but after three different glasses each, we had just scratched the tip of the Burgundy iceberg.

Next time, we're taking a few guided tours and dragging our Burgundy expert friend with us.

If you go on any of these, wander down a cellar tasting wines off a barrel types I suggest take care.

These wines can be left out over night without a wine stopper. So before you grimace and say "this is lousy" just check it has not gone off....

Thank you all. I just might have to find time for both.

On our Rhone river cruise we were taken to Beaune and to one of the many shops offering a cellar tasting. none of the wines we were offered seemed any better than what I can get at home at a better price [bilbo - they appeared to have poured from bottles, FWTW].

if you are really interested I suggest doing some research before you go into an estate that you already like - like Pommard for example - so that you are already familiar with that style of wine and know whether you like it or not.
