Beaches in Tenerife

We are thinking to rent a villa in Porta de la Cruz, Tenerife. This is a north side of the island, and I heard that ocean beaches are not good there. Are there better beaches that are within the driving distance from the Porta de la Cruz ?

What do you mean by "not good". All of the beaches on the Canary Islands have their sand imported from Morocco and aren't really all that impressive. But it is sand so at least you have that.

Playa de las Americas is touristy and in the south.

Best beaches in the north are Playa de Las Teresitas, near Santa Cruz, El Bullullo, in Puerto de la Cruz - lovely tranquil beach, very quiet, but not easy to get to. There is a cafe, but the currents can be strong at times there, so swim with caution.

Playa San Marcos is a volcanic beach, so dark/black sand, has lots of facilities, and is popular with the locals too. Close to Puerto de la Cruz.
Playa La Jardin, also Puerto de la Cruz, is another black sand beach, but also lovely.

Do not be put off by black sand. It is the natural sand of the western Canaries, and is lovely.

The beaches further south are white, with imported sand, but Sparkchaser is wrong in saying all the islands import it for all their beaches. Those southern beaches are also more touristy and crowded.
