Beach resort in Spain? Which Area?
Have never been to Spain and always wanted to go. Taking a week off with my husband and looking forward to relaxing vacation. Ofcourse, unfortunately it's last minute planning as we ant to go in late August! Thought we'd skip Barcelona / Madrid this time and head straight for a beach destination. Any advice on which islands/ areas to consider? Am very confused and primarily because I don't know much about spain! Looking for a nice beach, nice hotel...some local restaurants. Nothing too noisy or crowded...definitely not a partying only scene. Hoping to be spoilt at the hotel!Appreciate any advice I can get. Thanks.

Spain certainly has a lot of coast, so it won't be hard to find a vacation destination, even at this late date. However, you are not giving us much to go on. You want a nice beacn, nice hotel, restaurants. . . basically every place along all coasts. If you want an island vacation, you have both the Balaeres and the Canary Islands. Both are beautiful and have relaxing, wonderful destinations, and though there is a lot of partying going on, there are definitely lots of chances for relaxation.
Personally, were I to go island for this vacation, I would go to Menorca. I love the Balaeric Islands and menorca is just beautiful.
If you want something on the mainland that also avoids the cities, you can arrive to almost any coastal city (Barcelona, Valencia, Alicante, Málaga, Santander, etc) and make your way to a smaller, more relaxing resort town.
Give us a few more things to go on, and maybe there will be some recommendations.

Iīd recommend Fuerteventura, in the Canary Islands ...endless beaches, perfect weather all year round, there are all-included hotels, spa, all hotels are pretty new and the landscape is not (yet) spoilt...
Menorca is another good option. The Mediterranean coast is normally overcrowded and I canīt recommend it. Cádiz and the atlantic beaches are also an excellent choice (search on Google for playas de cádiz)

Beautiful beaches and beach area in Santander, northern Spain.Just a short trip from Bilbao and San Sebastian. The latter has a wonderful beach known as Concha, just in front of the Hotel Inglaterra.

Another thing: if you are looking to be spoiled by the hotel then I highly recommend staying somewhere that does the all-inclusive thing (spa, good restaurants/dining services, private beaches, etc). That is the easiest way to be pampered while in Spain.

Tarifa, in southern Spain, has some beautiful beaches. I have stayed at the Hurricane Hotel - http://www.hurricanehotel.com/ - and it's a very laid-back location with a beautiful pool, stables, and a nice restaurant.

Thank you everyone for the recommendations. I am looking for a 'luxury' hotel but would prefer if its not an all inclusive. WOuld like to occasionally step out for meals at some local places. Also, any suggestions for Menorca? Seems to come highly recommended. Will check out Tarifa and San Sebastian. Thank you so much!

menorca is certainly a beautiful quiet place not too overbuilt but beaches are not good, rocky small and crouded.
If you are thinking about the islands
I suggest Pollensa in the north of mallorca and certainly the hotel formentor will be my choice.

Santander has gotten a few mentions on this thread. I would narrow it down to el Sardinero, a few km west of downtown. For late August you should have reservations by now.
The beach is great! And around the first of September they celebrate a visit by the King and Queen many years ago: everyone dresses up in 'period' attire. I haven't found anyone who was there for that commemoration in any year who didn't enjoy it. The Gran Hotel Sardinero might fit your needs: ask for a room facing Mar Cantabrico

The hotel is in the north of mallorca, about 5 minutes to pollensa the local village.
Unless you want to stay just at the hotel you do need a car to explore the island.
Check ,Mallorca ,Pollensa,Costa de los Pinos,Soller, Alcudia.
This part of Mallorca it is not unexplored but not too spoil either.

I know...we should have had reservations by now (thus the cries for help...). Unfortunately, we've just moved to Europe and recently found out we can take time off!! Gotta work to pay for these vacations but oh - what a pain it is when you don't know if you can get away till last minute.

Me again - in about one minute my DH has decided we should go to greece. Had been doing some research on that too but still incomplete itinerary. Anyway, thanks everyone for the suggestions - Spain will be the next trip so the suggestions will come in handy and I'll finally do some research! Thanks again.
