Beach,& Snonkling areas near portofino.

My wife and I are looking to travel to Italy for our 25th wedding anniversary starting May 18th thru June 5th. We will fly into Rome and travel to Florence, Venice, and would like to travel to a nice beach area of Italy to enjoy the ocean. We love to snorkle and hang out at the beach. Our travel agent said that there was nice beaches, and snorkling near Portofino. Can anyone recommend some romantic places to stay near the ocean. Also, we would be open for suggestions for nice 3 star hotels centrally located in Rome, Venice, and Florence. Thanks, Louie& Vera.

Bumping up for Louie.
I cannot believe there are no good suggestions on locations for 'Snonkling' on a 25th wedding anniversary.

Portofino does not seem such a good suggestion to me, actually. There are far better beach areas that are closer to Rome or Florence. A very good, rather costly but charming area is Monte Argentario, north of Rome. it is an island that is connected to the mainland by two long and wide strips of sand, but it also has some rocky areas that are fit for snorkeling. Besides, in May water is still pretty cold in Liguria but fairly warmer in Tuscany.

Louie - There are several Diving companies in the Portofino area (Santa Margherita, Rapallo ...) - so my guess is that the area might be good for snorkling too.

But much of the peninsular between Portofino and Camogli (where they go diving) is best reached by boat as there's no road access, - so it may not be ideal in that respect.

The best beach, I believe, is at Paraggi - between Santa Margherita and Portofino.

Don't forget the Lido of Venice--Venices' nice beach only a few minutes from P. San Marco by vaporetto. Not sure whether or not there is good snorkling in the area. The water could be a bit chilly in May.

Lido is known as one of the most polluted beaches of Italy, due to its closeness to the city of Venice, to the presence of large chemical industries (Petrolchimico di Marghera), to the fact that it is an enclosed area in an enclosed sea (Adriatico) that is placed in a larger but enclosed sea (Mediterranean). Besides its ground is pretty sandy and muddy. THe beach can be fine (although certainly far from the best of what you can find in Italy) for a little tanning, but I wouldn't enter the sea there.

Not sure what closed area you're referring to, but the beach on the Lido of Venice that I visited faces the Adriatic, not the more polluted lagoon (which is being cleaned up and is much better than it was just a few years ago).

In any case, Adriati sea is the most polluted of all the eseas thet surround Italy, and its northern side is the most polluted due to Venice and nearby refineries (Petrolchimico di Marghera). Finally both Liguria and Veneto in May are a bit too cold for bathing.
