B&B's: Bath, Edinburgh, London, York

Got any suggestions for us? 2 adults, 2 children (5 & 3 years old). Any helpful web sites with many options?

Try www.aboutscotland.com - it has a loads of reviewed accomodation for b&bs + self-catering apartments (which might be a good idea for you?) - what i like most is they have loads of photos of the accomodation that their own photographer has taken. happy hunting.

We stayed at a lovely B&B in Bath, the Sydney Gardens Hotel. It's just across the Pulteney Street Bridge from the city, a lovely walk and right on the gardens with their own private gate. The room I stayed in with my teenage son was on the second floor and not only had ensuite bath and two beds for us, but also a larger bed (queen-sized at least, that we didn't use) so that would work out very well for you four. They have a small fridge in the hallway that's officially just for the milk for people's in-room teas (pot, cups, supplies, biscuits etc. provided). Classic gigantic full English breakfast (with grapefruit, muesli and yogurt available for the sensible people) included.

We stayed in these exact cities last summer with our two children (12 and 8). In Bath we stayed at Dorian House which would probably be too far a walk each day into town with this age of children. It is about 10 minutes to town but it is up a hill so the walk up from the city is tought. Very nice B&B with a family room in the eaves of the house. I believe it is 5 diamonds.

In London we stayed in two places because we visited the city in the middle and ends of the trip. We stayed at the Comfort Inn Hyde Park in a 3 bedroom apartment for 4 nights. Had a kitchen, washer/dryer combo, 1 bath, and living room. About a 7 minute walk to a tube station which again might be much for the little ones. At the end of the trip we stayed at the Thistle Marble Arch for 2 nights. We had reserved an executive level family room but when we arrived they did not have any so they gave us two very nice connecting rooms. Our rooms were like a very nice Hyatt in the US. Very comfortable. Good location across from Hyde Park and very close to a tube station.

In York we stayed at the Four Seasons Hotel a small B&B about a flat 7 minute walk to York Minster. Really liked this B&B a lot. Extremely nice owners, nice room, quiet location. I do highly recommend this and since it is a flat walk you could easily use strollers.

In Edinburgh we stayed at the Castle View Guest House. Excellent Location, really big family room, nice breakfast. Again really liked this. The only downside is that it is on the 4th and 5th floors of a building with no elevator. This might be tough with the little ones but the location and room are worth the effort.

All the B&B's had one double and two twin beds which worked out great for us. It was also nice having breakfast fixed for us each morning. They were all great about fixing what the kids (and we) liked.

In York make sure you go to the Railway museum. My kids loved it. In Edinburgh they also loved Dynamic Earth. In London my kids liked the Science Museum (with a great little kids hand on area) and the Museum of Natural History. My son was 6 when he went to these museums and he really loved them. Also in London don't miss Hamley's toy store and Harrod's toy department. Great places for the kids to shop.

Have a great time.

Kitty, could you give me the prices you paid for these accommodations? Thanks.

All the rates are in British Pounds.

The Four Seasons in York was 84 gbp per night.

Castle View Guest House in Edinburgh was 90 gbp per night.

Dorian House in Bath was 105 gbp per night.

Thistle Marble Arch in London was 153 gbp per night. (we reserved one executive quad room for this price but received two connecting rooms for this one price.)

Comfort Inn Hyde Park in London was 158 gbp per night. (We had reserved a two bedroom at this price but received the three bedroom.)

All of these included breakfast except for Thistle Marble Arch. Also, the Comfort Inn was only a roll and coffee, tea, and juise. The B&B's were all full English/Scottish breakfasts.

All these places have websites so do a search and you will see what their 2002 rates are.

All of these places I would gladly stay again. All were either 4 or 5 diamonds/stars according to the rating systems.
