B&B or Hotel close to Gatwick with access to transportation into Londa
Friends are meeting us in Greece in early October, but they are going to London for a few days first. They are flying in and out of Gatwick and would like to stay out that way. What they are looking for is a reasonably priced B&B or Hotel to stay in out that way and go into London daily. Does it make sense for them to do that? What is the best way to get to London from Gatwick or Hotel nearby and how long and how much would it be for them. Would they be better to stay in London (any suggestions for cheap clean hotel if so) and then go to Gatwick area for the last night as they fly out early in the morning to fly to Athens. Any help appreciated.

I'd stay in London itself in the Victoria area to save the cost of all those train fares, as for flying early in the morning there are trains between Victoria & Gatwick running all night so you don't have to stay near the airport for an early flight.
See www.nationalrail.co.uk & do a search here for "victoria"

It doesn't make sense to stay at Gatwick if your friends are spending more than one night and trying to see London. You'll have more choice looking for reasonably priced place in London proper.
Gatwick is about 30minutes away from London Victoria station on non-stop Gatwick Express, GBP23.50 return fare. Alternatively, you can take local train (which takes only slightly longer) for GBP16.00 or so.
It will be more expensive and more time-consuming to "commute" from LGW to London.
Early morning departure shouldn't be a problem if your friends stay near Victoria and catch an early train.

Too repeat what was said before "<i>It doesn't make <b><u>any</u></b> sense to stay at Gatwick</i>" except for possibly their last night - and even that probably isn't necessary if they stay near Victoria.
Gatwick is 30+ miles outside of the city. Any savings from staying out there (and staying near LGW is nearly as expensive as staying in the center of London) will be MORE than eaten up by the long commute and train fares.
What is their daily hotel budget? Then we can help w/ hotel suggestions.
