Bayonne or St Jean de Luz

Planning a trip to visit san Sebastian, my wife and I will take a day and drive around the French side and sleep there for 1 night and eat some awesome French food. Can't decide between Bayonne or St Jean de Luz? Need your thoughts travelers? Thanks in advance.

I would drive into the hills above SS and have lunch in St. Jean Pied du Port--a charming village in the French Basque region.

We stayed in Sare for 2 weeks in 2012, and also near St Jean Pied du Port for 2 weeks in about 2003. If you want something a little different than the seaside resort of San Sebastian - I would choose St Jean Pied du Port too. We've dined at Les Pyrenees twice - and it's in our "top 10" restaurants in France (we spend 2 months vacationing in different areas of France every year).

Between St Jean Pied du Luz & Bayonne - we prefer Bayonne. We dined at Auberge du Cheval Blanc twice - and had an excellent meal. Our Favorite meal in the Pays Basque region was at Tables des Freres Ibarbourne (dined there twice also).
