bayeux train station area ??
I will be staying in Bayeux not all that far from the train station. The place looks very nice on the web and their price very reasonable. It is also very convenient since I will be taking a train from Bayeux back to Paris at 6:45am on Sunday morning.
Does anyone have knowledge of the area, what is it like? nice? safe (as any place can be)? etc.... any info you may have will be appreciated. Thanks in advance. |

Bayeux is only a small country town. Any part of the town is equally "safe".
Have you checked the train schedules? As far as I can see, the first train to Paris on a Sunday is at 0904. Trains services on a Sunday morning are normally much reduced as few people travel then. |
geoff,
thank you for your response, your response is kind of what I expected but it's nice to hear from someone else, because my instinct could have been wrong. Yes, I did check the train schedule and I was surprised to see that a train did leave at 6:45am and arrives in Paris at 8:59am. I had checked it a few months ago and the earliest train was around 8am or so....I'm glad the schedule has changed. I checked the schedule on raileurope.com Are their schedules usually accurate? I really need the schedules to be accurate because I am then catching a train in Paris to Bruges at 11:55am and need to get from Gare Lazarre to Paris Nord. Thank you |
I see what you mean about the 9:04am train being the first, on the SNCF.com site, that is the first train. I wonder how come the raileurope.com site has that earlier train?
Anyone has idea why there's a discrepancy? and which site is more reliable? |
Have you got the date right? There are earlier trains on weekdays, but Sunday schedules are different. You should always check the national rail sites for the most accurate schedules. French trains are run by SNCF so their schedules will be definitive.

Yes, I double checked to make sure that I had the dates correct. What is also really odd, is that I was in contact with the Bayeux hotel owner and he mentioned to me a train time on Sunday morning for a train from Bayeux to Caen only and that time doesn't appear on the SNCF website either.
I'm emailed the Raileurope.com website asking them why there is a difference, now I'm really puzzled as to how they could sell tickets that may potentially be non-existent...I'm anxious to get their response. |
We stayed in Bayeux last year on June 2-3 before meeting our WWII group tour for the 60th anniversary. Even with the crowds (tourists and re-enactors) all over the place, I never felt unsafe. We stayed at the other end of town and the only unsafe thing was walking past all those tasty food and beer places! The slight hills helped offset any weight gain!
Enjoy! |
We stayed at the Chateau de la Bellefontaine right outside town, and walked into town past the RR station several times. It's right off a large roundabout from which one road leads to Caen, another leads to the west of town, and another leads straight into the center of town past the cathedral and Hôtel de Ville. So it's "right there" just a few meters outside the main area of town, which is both attractive and safe.
