Bayeux to Mt. St Micheal - Any interesting stops along the way?
For our trip in late March we will be based in Bayeux. The centerpiece of one day is a trip to Mt. St Michel.
Can anyone recommend an interesting stop along the way to break up the drive? A charming town? An old castle/manor house?
I was intrigued by Dinan - but unfortunately - that is in the wrong direction - into Brittany.
Thanks,

Arromanches - nice regional town - seek out the Bishop's Garden - behind an old Bishopry in the town centre - rave views across the usually sandy bay of Mont Saint-Michel hovering far far away - if you want to do as I did - drive down to the sea near town you can see the view from a level angle - synthesizing the excitement of what medieval pilgrims must have felt when they finally glimpsed the goal of their often rigorous pilgrimmage far away.
As you drive toward the Mont itself be sure to take the D-roads along the coast as you have the Mount in view the whole way - quite a mesmerizing site to me.
Have lunch in Arromanches - a very typical French regional town.

the Cotentin Peninsula ain't big so the really sweet old castle could easily be incorporated and you still would drive thru Avranches en route I think - kind of have to either way though you need not go into the town center.
Grandville is a fine fine old fortified port town too.

Near Mont Saint-Michel is the Cimetière Militaire Allemand, which contains the remains of nearly 12,000 German soldiers. We walked through the cemetery, and there is a fantastic view out to Mont Saint-Michel.

Consider chateaudebouceel.com This chateau is about 12 miles south of Mont S- Michel
The Counts family goes back many, many centuries and he will talk the families history as long as you want to listen.
In addition, a nice evening drink, made on the estate.
He takes car of one American grave ever year, buried in St. James Cemetery, very neat to the chateau.

For cities Coutances is right on the way and it has one of the great cathedrals in France - a quick stop if going thru it.
Nice enough regional town but like most in the area blitzed in war and rather quickly rebuilt.
