Bayeux Tapestry heading to London

The famous tapestry will be displayed at the British Museum from September 2026 to July 2026.
Treasures such as the Sutton Hoo hoard will be crossing the channel the other way.

Wow. I saw it a year ago in Bayeux.

heti, double-checking the dates, you used the same year (2026) -
"The British Museum said the tapestry would be on display from September 2026 to July 2027"

From the Bayeaux museum -
I wondered what the museum had to say -
"Bayeux Tapestry new museum
VISITORS INFORMATION: The Bayeux Tapestry Museum will close its doors to the public, for renovation work, from September 1st 2025. Reopening planned for October 2027. Thank you for your understanding."

Sorry about the dates confusion. Brain fart after a long tiring fruitless day.

We saw it in Bayeux many many years ago. We were the only people in there so could really take our time over it.

I might consider going back to Normandy to see the Sutton Hoo artifacts. We have visited Sutton Hoo, where they have replicas, but couldn't be bothered with a trip to London to see the real stuff.

Unlike football .

Still, one enormous piece of propaganda to explain why "William the bastard" was suddenly the rightful king of England ;-)

hetismij2 Jul 9th, 2025 05:55 AM

Blame Edward the Confessor for that.

It is a wonderful thing to view, especially if you get the chance to stand and stare at small bits of it and notice all the details!

All of the small details along the bottom. Truly amazing. I used to do counted cross-stitch and a bit of embroidery and imagined what it was like to be able to work on that piece. Surely it was a honor.

There was a line when we were there but it flowed easily. Didn't feel rushed.

Me too. I even have my own bit of Bayeux tapestry! I can't imagine what it must have been like sewing away on it 900 years ago.

I visited in the winter when queues were no where, I like the little pictures of incompetence and real life hidden in it. I imagine all the bored women having to do this rather than talk to the queen. Then the highpoints was the damage caused when it was taken to Paris on an old cart, have they repaired it all now?

Britain will be reciprocating with some major items on display in France

hetismij2 Jul 9th, 2025 09:42 AM

I said that kerouac - I may even make the trek to Normandy to see them. I hope the French make the effort too.

In case you haven't seen this:
https://www.bayeuxmuseum.com/en/the-...xplore-online/

You can zoom out and see the entire length of the tapestry on your screen, then zoom in to amazing detail - down to individual threads being visible.

I've spent time looking at it when I was researching Viking era ships. Truly incredible.

We saw it in October about ten years ago and we might have been one of a handful who were there which was great as you could really take your time to look at it.

Fra_Diavolo Jul 9th, 2025 12:38 PM

Seeing it was a highlight of our trip to Normandy.

Same here, we saw it in 2015 and again in 2017. Exquisitely worked, truly a marvel. I used to do a lot of cross stitch in my younger years, and fine embroidery until quite recently, so I know how much time and effort would have gone into producing the piece. That too in those dark and dingy rooms, with very little natural light.

I could barely tear myself away, luckily there weren’t too many people and I was able to take in the details. Would love to go back again!

Thanks for the link Nelson, will definitely check it out.

We saw it during a visit to Bayeux in the 80s when travel was much more calm; I'd love to see it again and hope we can make it to London before it leaves next year. What a wonderful opportunity.

janisj Jul 9th, 2025 05:08 PM

For anyone planning on visiting the British Museum to see the tapestry, it is bound to be a VERY popular exhibition and likely to sell out. So keep on top of things and book as soon as tickets go on sale - especially if you have specific dates.

starrs Jul 10th, 2025 06:24 AM

May of last year was very calm too in Bayeux. I wanted to visit the beaches of Normandy before the 80th anniversary of D-Day. I'm so glad I went then.

" I even have my own bit of Bayeux tapestry!" Elucidate, heti!
