Bayeux area lodging: need feedback
Options available for our May trip, all are within our budget.
Bayeux> Hotel d'Argouges Hotel Lion d'Or Chateau du Sully Chateau de le Bellefontaine N/A Hotel Churchill and Ferme de la Ranconniere in Crepon. Trip advisor traveler noted that the 'Bellefontaine' had flies and beetles in their room and luggage back in Fall 05'. St. Cirq stayed there 3 years ago and didn't have this problem. |
This may not be of any help. But several years ago we stayed at the Auberge St. Pierre in the heart of Bayeux. It is located near the center of town. It was very quiet, spacious and clean. In October 2003 it cost 114E per night for a triple with breakfast.
|
Thanks N2it, I'll check it out and add it to my list.
|
We stayed at Hotel d'Argouges in 2002 and thought it was perfect for us; clean, friendly and comfortable. I recall the Lion d'Or to be pricier and more elegant if I'm not mistaken. I've never read a bad review of the d'Argouges.
|
I stayed at the Hotel Mogador in September 2002 and was very happy with it. It was not a fancy place, but it was clean and comfortable. I would definitely stay there again.

Hi everyone:
Wanted to let you know we booked 4 nights at the d'Argouges for early May. After a couple of e-mails to sort out the proper size bed we needed, (They didn't have any rooms with 2 twins together and a double bed just doesn't fit us), we were able to reserve a queen bed room with queen bed and a seperate bath room located on the 1st floor looking out into the gardens. Rate 102 euros with Breakfast. The reservation staff, Cindy, was very helpful in accomodating what we needed. I'll let you know how our stay was upon our return. |
We had supper one evening at La Ferme de la Ranconniere in Crepon. It is in a small village several miles from Bayeux. It was a very elegant place. The food and service were excellent. (The waiter and cook bent over backwards to find something for my picky 8 year old to eat!) Although you are not staying there, it would be good option for a meal.

I am sorry I am late posting. My DH and I stayed at Chateau du Sully and we loved it. Our room was huge with a great view of the property. The grounds are charming, with gardens and long yards. The breakfast was fine, but not spectacular. Our room had floor to ceiling windows and was extremely comfortable.
We dined at Lion D'Or and it was one of our best meals in France. A title not easily won! Bon voyage. |
Hi all.. I am trying to make a reservation at the Hotel d'Argouges but am having great difficulty with finding any way of contacting them on the net.. can someone PLEASE let me have an email address ?

A quick Google of "Hotel d'Argouges email" came up with [email protected] and [email protected] (click the 2nd field if those are highlighted; Fodors is adding the links to those email addresses, not me, and Fodors is screwing them up!) Not sure if either one is still valid, but you can try them.

I emailed the aol.com address, and it was returned. I have booked Hotel Lion d'Or. I'd be interested to know if you are able to get a reservation at d'Argouges.
|
Hotel D'Argouges can be booked through Karen Brown.
|
We (family of 3) stayed at Hotel Lion d'Or for 3 nights several years ago. We were very pleased with our choice - location, service, and accomodation were great for us!
|
We highly recommend Lion d'Or- great location, wonderful restaurant, and helpful owner.
|
I know you already booked another hotel but I wanted to give another thumbs up to Lion d'Or.
What a perfect location and great food. The rooms are charming. And you never know who you might meet in the dining room. |
DiG...don't miss out on the Chateau Sully experience...outstanding in every way, something you'll remember. Ask for Room 25, top floor overlooking the front of the very beautiful establishment...excellent restaurant...actually a 3 km. walk to Bayeux unless you have a car.
Choose the Chateau de Sully. Stu T. |
Thanks everyone for your dining suggestions. I listed them our travels.
If you reread my Jan 31 post you'll see there was no availability for 2 twins however we were able to book a queenbed. Contact: Cindy, reservations [email protected] www.hotel-dargouges.com 21 rue ST Patrice 14400 Bayeux Tel 02.31.92.88.86 |
The website must be very new; that's good that they have one now. Thanks for giving it to us, DiG.
Did we ever figure out what happened to website of La Chaine d'Or? |
Thanks for the email addy.. but drat it, when they replied they were full when we want to be there.. any other great hotel suggestions for staying in Bayeux?
|
As I said before, the Hotel Mogador was a very decent if modest place when I stayed in 2002. Location is close to th center of Bayeux but not right in (easy to walk to stuff). I would stay there again.

Hi Grandmere: I posted what happened on original post for that. Sorry you missed it.
What happened is that LaChaine's website was only running in French. They said the English version was being upgraded. I guess they're still not completed. I did all our corrsepondence by email. They were great to work with. Board (D) & (B) or (L) & (D) is 92E, Kingbed 120E. They had 2 rooms left for our dates so we were fortunate in securing our Rez'. |
Hi Screamer:
Have you tried Andrew's suggestion of Hotel Mogador or Hotel Lion d'Or? What are your dates? Hotel Lion d'Or, AUberge St.Pierre, and the Chateau du Sully had availabilty for May 5-10 The Bellefontaine, Ferme de la Ranconniere did not have availabilty. Also check trip advisor and venere.com for lodging. |
Hi DiG
Still awaiting a reply from Churchill Hotel about which Ive heard good reports. If not it will be the Lion d'Or - hopefully. We are going over the Easter hols - need accommodation for 15/16th April. Thanks for the assistance! |
DiG,
Thanks for repeating the info; guess I did miss it on original post. Another musing: it seems that they are charging differently now, unless I am misunderstanding what you're saying. We paid so much for the room (can't remember what it was now) and had to spend a certain amount/person for dinner. And there were few guests there; I think in addition to our foursome for dinner, there was only another table (2 at most) occupied. It felt as though we were private guests. We arrived on Mon., 5/9, approx. same time, right? But maybe you'll be there for weekend and therefore busier time. Interesting! |
So Late Rooms cocked up our confirmed reservations for the Chirchill. Having cancelled our hotel in Reuen we are left not knowing where to stay. Hopefully the Lion d'or will come up trumps.. will let you know.
|
In my last post I see that I have used what is probably a colloquialism, "so much"--I didn't mean "very much", but "a certain amount".
Good luck, screamer; as you're probably finding out, it is late to book now at popular places for April. I booked d'Argouges in Jan. for May. |
Your good wishes worked Grandmere! We are now booked into the Lion d'Or - 114 Euros inc. breakfast. Now booking our trip to the D-day beaches - I think a whole day will be required as my husband is very interested - hope I get to see the tapestry too.
|
Screamer, I'd be interested to hear about the booking snafu. How did LateRooms screw it up?
|
Hi WillTravel,
Screw it up is perhaps better than cocked it up.. but in whatever language they didnt do too good!! LateRooms - first let me say I have never had a problem with them before and have booked many hotels - mostly in the UK but some in Europe - without any problem. This time when the French guy phoned I gave him the dates, he checked with the hotel and said it was ok, he later confirmed in writing that the rooms were available. Later that day he phoned back to say they were not available .. then sent an email the context of which stated 'date the availability was made in Bayeux hotel were wrong so hotel call back and faxed a cancellation'. Is there some special reason for asking? |
Screamer, thanks for the details. I asked because I've thought of using LateRooms, so was curious to hear about its reliability. It sounds like it's as good as the hotels' reliability.
