Bayern Pass/Ticket Questions
 

Hello,

I am looking at using the bayern ticket in germany when I visit in July but was not sure if this covers all of germany or just certain areas. If anyone knows anything about this ticket I would be happy to learn all I can!

The Bayern - Ticket covers (as you might have thought) the "Republic of Bavaria" (Freistaat Bayern).

as Logo points out (a little too brusquely, I might opine), the Bavarian (Bayern) pass covers only travel in Bavaria. There are similar passes for most of the German Länder (states) as well as the Schönes Wochenende pass, which is valid throughout Germany on weekends. Go to bahn.de, "Internat. guests", "Offers for travelers in Germany", "regional tickets". There you can find out everything about the S-W ticket as well as the other Land tickets.

These tickets are a great bargin. They require a little bit of sacrifice (such as regional trains, 2nd class, after 9 AM), but you can save a lot with them.

The hard part for me is finding a map that shows the outlines and names of each state with enough detail to tell if two locations are within its borders.

Luckily, Bavarian is a very large state stretching from the southern border to well north of Bamberg. Unfortunately it does not include the Frankfurt Airport.

I would have to second Gary's comment on the difficulty knowing where the Land borders are. I have had some success using the interactive map on www.meinestadt.de. It shows some towns, and you can often find ones near state borders.

If traveling between Bavaria and Frankfurt, the lasts stop in Bavaria is Kahl (Main). If you are using a Bayern ticket, you would need a regular ticket from Kahl to Frankfurt (or FRA) to finish the trip.

Thery're on any printed street map/regional map of Germany. Having a printed map and doing research on the internet helps a lot (at least for me) btw the Bavarian state exists for more than 1000 years, Germany only since 1871 ;-)

As far as determining the limits of the rail lines in Bavaria, Bayern-Takt.de has a complete map of the rail network at http://www.bayern-takt.de/media/PDF-...neu_260106.pdf. If you think this map is helpful, save it as a pdf file on you home computer, as sometimes I got a server error when attempting to download it.

Note: the Bayern ticket is valid into Salzburg, Kufstein, and Ulm, as well as for the line through Reutte (Tirol) and from Memmingen to Lindau through Baden-Württemberg. It is also valid in most Verkehrverbünden (metro transit districts) in Bavaria as well as for many bus lines, such as Regional Verkehr Oberbayern (www.rvo-bus.de), which operates buses all along the alps, from Berchtesgaden to Garmisch-Partenkirchen.

By reading everyones input I think I am finally less confused about rail passes vs purchasing point to point tickets. I am pretty sure that if I purchase a combination of bayern, weekend and normal tickets it will be a lot cheaper than purchasing a pass. However can anyone help me with identifying the stations at several sites. When you search on schedules it states the search is ambiguous and gives a choice of numerous stations. This is the case with Wurzburg, Ljublijana and Zagreb. How do I find out the names for the stations in the centre of these cities? Your help is appreciated.

can´t help you with Zagreb and Ljubljana, but the main/central station is Hauptbahnhof in German, often abbreviated as "HBf".
Another problem is that there is no Wurzburg. You can´t just drop the dot´s with the umlauts; if you don´t have them on the keyboard substitute ü for ue, ä for ae, ö for oe. You want to search for Wuerzburg HBf :-)))
