Bavarian Folk Evening - Garmisch/Mittenwald

We'll be in the area on a Monday and a Tuesday in March and want to do one of these evenings with the Schuhplattlers and the pork knuckles and the yodeling and the traditional costumes (we promise to stay in our regular travel clothes!) just to have a zany time. Who knows of a hotel or gasthaus in Garmisch or Mittenwald that does these things regularly?

Thanks.

The Gasthof Fraundorfer in the Partenkirchen side of GArmisch-Partenkirchen does this sort of thing in their restaurant every night except Tuesday (at least they didn't have it the Tuesday night I was there). Here's their website: http://www.gasthof-fraundorfer.de/

Hey Russ:

I thought you new eveything about Germany and Austria :-) !! The above poster has the place. THe Frauendorfer, although has become a tourist mecca, it still is the place I go when in Garmish (actually its in Parkenkichen) The owner is a living postcard for Bavaria! Have Fun!

JOHN

Thanks for the tips, John and Ellen. Should we just show up at the Fraundorfer on Mon or Tue, or should we call ahead to make sure we get a table and that the Lederhosen are actually leapin' that night to avoid disappointment?

Russ, you might also check with the local information office to see if there will be a "heimatabend" in the area during that time... those are the real thing, not a show marketed to tourists, and watching kids performing on musical instruments, dancing, and singing with their parents, siblings, etc. is really touching. Of course, so are some of the charming older couples dressed up in their best Sunday-go-to-meeting lederhosen and dirndls to perform together. These family and/or village groups obviously put a lot of time and effort into their performances and they're quite good!

Do make sure you go to Mittenwald as well. It is such a delightful little town for me much nicer than Garmisch

Russ, I suppose it doesn't hurt to call ahead. I didn't participate Monday night (it isn't easy getting to sleep with the hoopla from the restaurant)and was planning to go on Tuesday, but to my disappointment, they are off on Tuesday.

Hey Russ:

I would call ahead to make sue it is open. The place is fairly large on the inside. The locals have their "Stammtish" (sp?) but there should be plenty of room...except if you hit a bus group from Chicago like we did! Wow! Was that some time! I have film!! Have some schwienhaxen and weissebier on me!!

JOHN

Thanks, John, Ellen, Ann, for your comments and suggestions.

Thanks for the tip, AMA, but I beat you to it - we're staying at a small private B&B in Mittenwald! Anything you particularly enjoyed there??
