Bavarian Day Trip: suggestions?
Hi,
I am planning a trip to Munich in May and was thinking about renting a car for a day to drive down to Oberammergau, Mittenwald and maybe at least 1 other Bavarian town. What other towns in Southern Bavaria should I stop in during my day trip? How long a trip is this; is this too much for one day? Has anyone done something similar? How was renting a car and driving in Germany? |
Hi M,
A one-day rental will be almost as much as 3 days. My rule is that the driving time should be less than 4 hr if I wish to see anything. I suggest a visit to Ludwig's Linderhof palace when you are in Oberammergau. You can plot your route at www.viamichelin.com. ((I)) |
It is not that far and could be done in one day but better with an overnite and 2 days. Include Fussen and the Weiskirche.

Between Ober and Mitt you have Garmish! Big town in that area.
You can try this: Oberammergau Mittenwald then head down to Innsbruck! Autobahn back to Munich Would be a long but workable day trip! |
If you're only renting a car for one day, you could stop in Ettal, which is located between Oberammergau and Mittenwald. You'll probably drive right through it so you might as well stop.
The Ettal Abbey is definately worth a look around. The monastery brews their own beer and liqueurs, if that is of interest to you (but don't drink and drive). We had a very good lunch at the restaurant located across the street from the monastery. Here is a link to my trip report from October 2007. Our journey to Oberammergau, Ettal, Linderhof and Mittenwald starts on Day 14. http://www.fodors.com/forums/threads...p;tid=35116484 If you could do a two-day car rental I think you would have a more enjoyable time exploring the area. Or you could try taking public transportation, which is what we did. Robyn :)>- |
