Bavarian accommodations for a family of six
We will be spending about a week in Bavaria in early August. We are a family of six - my husband and I, two teens, and two early twenties. We would like to see the castles, Salzburg, and Berchtesgaden. Are there recommendations for an affordable apartment that would accommodate our family? Ideally, it would be centrally located so that we could make several day trips to desired locations.
Thank you for any help you may offer.

Everything you propose to see is in Southern Bavaria and Austria. I suggest looking in Oberbayern.
You'll want a Ferienhäuser (holiday house) or Ferienwohnungen (holiday apartment).
Start looking here:

http://www.ferienwohnungen.de/europa...nd/oberbayern/
http://www.fewo-direkt.de/urlaub-fer...berbayern/r264
http://www.ferienhausmiete.de/ferien...hp?subregion=4
Since the sites are in German, I suggest using Chrome and Google Translate to find your way.

Hi trippymom,
If you'd like to overnight in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, you can use the town's own website to find an apartment:
www.gapa.de
Look under "accommodation" and then I think it's "vacation apartment" or "vacation flat."
You should also know that, when you read the description of each apartment, Germans count the living room as 1 room. So, if you want an apartment with 2 bedrooms, you need to be looking for a 3-room apartment. This applies for all German apartment websites.
Have fun as you plan!
