Bavaria - What to See?
 

Hi everyone,

I'm off to for my 2nd time to Munich, and am hoping to see some places in Bavaria on day trips. I've got two days spare, and am thinking of one for Augsburg (possible in a day trip?) and one for Obersalzburg (am interested in seeing WWII history, so would like to visit the Berghof, ect. But is it all open in winter?)

Things to consider for your daytrips. Rothenburg odT, Salzburg, Fussen, Oberammergau, Bertschesgaden, Linderhof, Ettal Monastary, Herren Chiemsee, Garmish, Mittenwald. I personally like to rent a car to take a loop though the alps or up the Romantic Road to Rothenburg.

Augsburg? Sure. 1 hour by train from Munich, thus easy to reach. ICE trains run at least every hour.

Augsburg is not one of the top tourist sites, although it shows more than enough traces of its great and rich past - together with Nürnberg, it used to be the wealthiest city in the whole empire. A place for specialists, not for the average "must-sees only" tourist. So if you want to stay away from the crowds and see a place which isn't visited by everybody, go for it. Definitely see the Fuggerei, the city hall, the church of St. Ulrich and Afra, the Maximilianmuseum (history and art of the city).

I would highly recommend Rothenburg, Garmisch/Oberammergau (very close together), Salzburg or Nurnberg. I lived in Munich for several years, and these were the side trips that I enjoyed the very most. Bavaria is absolutely beautiful but these towns, in my opinion, are the most beautiful and have the most charm. All very easy day trips via train. Most things are open throughout the winter, but not on Sundays.

We vacation there quite often and base in Salzburg (which I happen to love) If you have kids with you or even if you don't. Ice Caves, salt mine (o the slide!!) Berchestgarden is lovely. A trip the eagle's nest is gorgeous and can be emotional. The elevator isn't that bad. lol Enjoy your trip.

Hitler's Eagle's Nest above Obersalzberg does not open until 1 May. Roads will not be cleared until then.
