Bavaria - Munich - visit to Eagles's Nest
 

Hi,
Next July i will visit Bavaria with my family and, one of the days are reserved to visit the Eagles Nest.
Is it possible to go to the top with my own car?
Is there any alternatives ?

You have to take an elevator to Eagles Nest.

They have special busses that you have to take to the top, then get into an elevator for the final ride up to the restaurant. Make sure you go on a clear day. ((b))

suggest you contact Eagles Nest Tours thru their web site. Americans run the program and it is excellent. have used twice. if the weather is not good they will not go.

There are buses that go from a parking lot at Hinterseck, near Obersalzberg. The bus road is only wide enough for one vehicle. All the buses go up at one time, then come down together. It wouldn't work with private cars sharing the road. Plus, there is a steep drop-off. Maybe they don't want the liability. From the top, I have looked down at people hiking up. When you get to the bus parking lot near the top, you can pay to ride the elevator to the Eagles' Nest. However, I don't think the elevator is required to visit the building. There is a switchback train up to the top (I always come down that way. Once I saw Enzian blooming along the trail.

That is a switchback "trail", not "train". It is an easy walk down; I don't know how difficult it would be up, but the elevator is cheap.

The bus ride up is totally amazing: please know/learn how much engineering talent and labor went into that in 1937!

It is quite a bus ride and those bus engines must be very powerful because the incline is steep. Then suddenly you're at another level where you go into the mountain and into an elevator where you rise to the "Eagles Nest" The views are incredible and while we were up there the clouds came in and it was suddenly like a thick fog. Just as quickly the clouds left.

We ate lunch in the small dining room at the top of Eagles Nest and really enjoyed it. The food was quite good!
