Bavaria/Innsbruck -- snow in mid december?
 

We are thinking of traveling through Germany & Austria beginning late nov & ending w/ a few days of relaxation & winter fun in either Bavaria or Tirol.

Does anyone know what our chances of having snow at that time of the yr are? Someone advised me that odds were better in Tirol because the alps are higher there.

They both look gorgeous!

We are not really skiers, so we don't need fabulous runs. But we'd like to sled, snowshoe, tube, take a sleigh ride, that sort of thing.

And then relax and unwind w/ some spa treatments!

Any advice?

Normally no snow in the towns and valleys that early -- there should be snow up on the mountain peaks though (Zugspitze, Alpspitze, Kreuzeck).

Many cable cars in the Alps shut down for maintenance for some time from mid-November till mid-December. That shall give you an idea ;-)

Winter only begins in late Dec - so there is often no or little snow until you get to the high alps (where there is snow year round). Christmas is often opening of ski season - and then not
in the valleys.

The Germans and Austrians are very good at maintaining the roads when it does snow. The area you are talking about is in the alps so you can never tell about the weather.

I think I read that winter tires are mandatory on rental cars in Germany now. If you are concerned about that be sure to ask. The rent car companies will be glad to make them available for a price if they aren't included.
