Bavaria in December

We are going on a 9-day tour of Bavaria in December. We will be based in Garmisch. What kind of weather can we expect? (PS We are Floridians!) Thanks!

Joyce,

Expect cold!

My wife and I took our first trip to Bavaria when we lived in Boca Raton over the Thanksgiving holidays. There was already snow at Neuschwanstein Castle and in the Alps and we got the rental car stuck in snow after taking a wrong turn heading from Garmish through Tirol

Dress warma and expect snow. Particularly in Garmish as that is a main ski resort area.

US

i lived in munich, which is near garmisch for a year. expect COLD. be sure to dress warmly and be prepared for snow. however it's beautiful and the christmas markets are great. if you are christian, find a church. they celebrate the advent which is quite a sight to see. also, be sure to visit the kristkindelmarkt in munich (christmas mart). bring home a handmade "krippe." it's a nativity scene. also, be sure to try the gluehwein. have a great trip!

Being from Ottawa, I don't find it so cold, but I suppose it is really cold to some. I was there last Xmas and on the 27th, it started to rain (I live nearby). At Neuschwanstein, the snow had basically melted - so also be prepared for wet weather just in case.

It can be really really cold. Last December there were a few weeks when it was below 0 fahrenheit. We spent a weekend in Oberstdorf and it was soooooo cold!!! But sunny. :)

Don't forget to visit Oberamergau (sp).

We lived in northern Bavaria for 2 years. It is cold and damp during December. Warm socks (those liners worked for me) and boots helped. Also the hot Gluhwein. If you have the opportunity to travel North, don't miss the Christkindel Market in Numemburg.

Joyce:

I have been to Garmish about 5 times in the winter! Beautiful! Germangirl gave you great advice. Garmish is a great place to base. It will be cold, but could be very sunnny. The only drawback is that you might have to travel in snowy conditions (hard for experience winter drivers, could be a nightmare for Floridians!!) Train travel would be the way to go! Day trips to Munich, Innsbruck. oops! I just re-read your post. I see that you said TOUR. If that means that the transportation is taken care of then you have nothing to worry about except to dress for skiing! (layers|) Get the group to stop at the "Frauendorfer" for a great bavarian evening! You will have the time of your life!!
JOHN

It could be pretty cold - which isn't such a bad thing if you are prepared. You will want to make sure you have a few layers to wear inside as well. German heating systems are sometimes different than we are used to and I find it better to have some warm jammies and socks along. A scarf if also a handy item for both men and women.
Have a great trip it sounds like fun!
Lily
