Bath/Stone Henge
 

Okay, I've posted a question about this before, but here's a new twist. If we take the train to Bath, is it easy to take a bus to Stone Henge and back to Bath so we can catch the train back? Or can you buy a round trip ticket to Bath, get off at Salisbury to see Stone Henge and take a bus to Bath? Has anyone done this? My boyfriend and I prefer doing this on our own without a tour, thanks.

I cannot answer your question directly, but are you thinking that Stonehenge is close to Salisbury? It is close to Amesbury, which is a short bus ride from Salisbury. The last time I was there, you had to walk from the bus station in Amesbury to the Stones themselves, unless you were part of a tour group.

The three times I have been there, I took the train to Salisbury from London, but had to take the bus from Salisbury to Amesbury, which is about an 8 mile ride. On one trip, my wife and I took a bus in Salisbury that went first to Old Sarnum and then to Stonehenge and Amesbury before returning to Salisbury. I wanted to stay at the Stones longer, so I left the tour and ended up walking back to Amesbury to take the bus back to Salisbury for the return to London. <BR>The other times I simply took the bus from Salisbury to Amesbury and walked out to the Stones and back. It is about 2 miles one way as I recall. (But that is a hazy recall.) I know of no passenger train service to Amesbury. <BR>If you are pressed for time, I think a tour of some description is the best bet because it provides the most convenient transportation by taking you directly to your main attraction.

We took the train to Salisbury to catch the bus to Stonehenge. The problem was we were heading for Bath and got to Salisbury at 9:00 - hoping to fit in a whole day. Problem was the first bus didn't leave for Stonehenge until 11:15. The bus schedule changes by the season. It was definately worth the wait and you can see the Salisbury cathedral while you wait. The only thing we would have done differently is that we bought a round trip ticket to save money which meant we had to stop in Salisbury on the way back and it took much longer than simply taking the train that does a nonstop from Bath to London. We spent much more time at the stations than we had planned and therefore had less time in Bath but were glad we got to see everything.

To Julie- <BR>Since on other posts, you seem to be in the nasty habit of correcting others' grammar, etc... Just though I'd let you know: <BR> <BR>"Definately" IS SPELLED D-E-F-I-N-I-T-E-L-Y! In your furure writing endeavors, you may want to state, as in the second sentence of your post on this particular forum, "the problem was that...," rather than what you currently have.

Alex, <BR> <BR>Just a suggestion, I have been to Stonehenge and was disappointed. If you want large stones check out Avebury it's close by and its stones circle an entire village and there is so much more to do there.
