Bath, Lacock, Salisbury, Stonehenge
My daughter (grown) and I are going to England for the first time. We are from the US.
We are planning a trip out of London for two nights. I thought we would go to Bath and then Lacock. I have hotel reservations (Red Lion) in Lacock. Then the next day we would go to Salisbury, Amesbury and Stonehenge. I have tickets to Stonehenge that evening, we are going on the tour where you get to walk among the stones. I have a reservation at the Holiday Inn in Amesbury. At first, I thought we would try to take trains and buses. But what to do with our luggage is a problem. Also getting to Lacock and Stonehenge in the evening sounds like a problem. My daughter lived and drove in Japan for two years, so I think she should be able to drive without too much trouble. I looked at car reservations (Hertz) picking up at Bath train station and dropping off at Salisbury train station. But our Stonehenge reservations are Saturday evening and we need to drop off at Salisbury the next day. Hertz is closed at Salisbury and Bath train stations on Sunday. I'm at work and can't access Europcar but will try this evening from home. Does this itinerary sound ok? Anyone have any ideas what to do about the car? Also is Lacock pronounces lay-cock or lah-cock? Thank you! |
Drop the car back at Heathrow maybe?
Lay-cock. We spent a wonderful day there last summer, visiting the Abbey (I am a Photographer so I rely wanted to see the Abbey) and just wandering around the village We were staying at the campsite by the village. |
I meant to add if you have time visit Avebury too.

Yes - take the train to Bath Spa (main station) You could of course drop the car in Salisbury and take a cab out the several miles to Stonehenge - saving some time on a car rental if your drove to Heathrow to return it Take train Salisbury to London then at leisure on Sunday - after hitting Sunday services in the famous cathedral. And don't neglect doing a short walk along a stream due south of town to catch the famous view of the cathedral soaring high above meadows - a scene caught many times on canvasses by famous artists, such as Constable: https://www.google.com/search?q=cons...w=1745&bih=864 I have not been there for what seems generations but I believe the view is as mesmerizing now as when I went and when Constable and others painted them. |
hetismj2 - Dropping the car off at Heathrow sounds like a good idea.
PalenQ - Bath Spa Hertz is closed on Sunday. Thank you for the tip on view of the cathedral in Salisbury. Tips like these are what makes Fodors so great. |
Check with Auto Europe for your car rental. They work with a variety of rental agencies. www.autoeurope.com

I was enchanted with Lacock. Loved wandering the streets of the village. Like Hetismij, I am a photographer (only amateur), and I really enjoyed the Abbey with its photography Museum. Henry Fox Talbot had a lot to do with developing photography in its infancy.

The ONLY place that makes sense for dropping the car is at LHR. All the majors are there and it sis open extended hours 7 days a week.
