Bastille Day

We will be in Paris with our 12 year old daughter in July and wanted to know people's experiences with Bastille Day (yes, fete nationale).

I've read that shops, museums, etc. close the day before and the day of the holiday, so what would poor American tourists do? Are there specific events, places, etc. that one should see/do during those days.

Thanx,
