Basle/Dornach/Arlesheim

Could anyone give me information about this ara of Switzerland. We'll be there in Aug.and will probably be staying in Dornach. It is an easy train ride to Basle? Thanks

It's even easier. Dornach and Arlesheim are on the suburban trolley service (line no. 10, service every 10 minutes to the centre of Basel). there is also a rail service by the federal railway (once every hour).

Enjoy your trip.

Phil.

Basel is one of our most favorite cities. (My husband went there frequently on business) Kinda overlooked by most tourists. On the river, good "old town", excellent restaurants, some of the best museums in the world, wonderful munster (cathedral), Roman ruins, a river ferry pulled by the river current.. In addition, it is a "walking city" with everything easily accessible. Helpful tourist office and city tours in season. Well worth a visit. In fact, worth staying there as long as possible.

Thank you, Phil. Do you have any info on hotels in Dornach?

Elainee,
Thank you so much. We are looking forward to Basel and you make it sound wonderful. Do you have any recommendations for hotels in Dornach/Arlesheim?

Dornach and Arlesheim are really small villages, basically, outher suburbs of Basel. Not sure, there are too many hotels or B&B around.
You could always contact the Basel Tourist Board for more information or brochures about the whole area.

There is one nice place, I found in Dornach called 'Hotel Engel'.
www.hotel-engel.ch
Just found out, that the Kloster Dornach (monastry) offers overnight possibilities for individuals, too.
Doubles with breakfast are CHF 100.-.
www.klosterdornach.ch

Hope this helps.

Marmade,

can't help you on hotels but here's an exhibition you shouldn't miss: an overview of expressionism from its precursors (El Greco for example) to today at the Fondation Beyeler in Riehen.

Haven't been yet, but sounds great. Through August 10.
www.beyeler.com

Have a great trip,
Andre

One must see is extensive Roman ruins in Keiser-Aust (sp?). If you saw "Gladiator" you know the area. Excellent Roman ruins on/near Rhein River. Outpost of Roman Empire, rediscovered in 19c. You can take boat from Basel, or faster go by bus. It is also a nice village/Basel suburb.
I miss going to Handro factory outlet store. Not sure of location near Basel. Taken by friends and also went by train. Long walk from train station, better to get cab. But Handro stuff absolutely cheap!!!!
