Basilica di San Marco
I've got a few questions about the basilica in Venice...
Rudy Maxa says in a travel video about Venice that there is a "lighting schedule" for the basilica in order to better see the mosaics. Anyone know if this is correct and is there any way to get the schedule in advance? (I didn't see anything on the official website). Also, I presume there will be a souvenir shop where I can buy interior photos of the basilica (no photography allowed inside).. ... and will there be a brochure or audio-guide tour available? thanks and grazie.. |
Hello Travelnut,
I remember reading about the basilica lighting as well. However, all I can ever find is that it's lit only during mass. There is a souvenir shop as you exit the church. It's got plenty of books, post cards, posters, etc. Depending on what quality you're looking for, you might even want to check out some of the large calendars. Some of those photo pages are of framing quality. Be sure to watch the sun's position around the square. At certain times, it shines brightly on the outside mosaics, which make them sparkle like gold! Have a good zoom, and you've got a good photo op! Have fun! |

I was under the impression that they were gold. ((I)) |
There is also a gift shop and place to buy postcards upstairs enroute to see the bronze horses.
|
Are you allowed to go to the gallery area to see the horses on your own, or only if on guided tour..?
|
The galleries are the museum. There is a fee, but it is worth it because it also brings you closer to the mosaics. When downstairs, pay attention to the floor; it's like a quilt in marble.
|
Make sure you visit the museum upstairs as this is where you get a really close view of the mosaics. While we were there last May the lights came on and stayed on for maybe 5 minutes. I assume there is a schedule.

Ira - :)) I knew as soon as I re-read my post that it didn't come out right, lol!
But still, in the bright sunshine, it's magnificent to see! |
Thank you all...

Hi, travelnut - when we were in Venice in november, The lights wre on on Sat [can't remember the times] and sunday [all day].
It's well worth timing your visit to catch the illumination. also, the extra 3e to see the golden screen is well worth paying - it's fabulous [literally!] Good luck! |
