Based in Sorrento - day trip to Capri?
I'll be in Sorrento in September for three short days - my first time being south of Rome. The day I arrive, I could have time to take a day trip to Capri. Good idea, or are there better suggestions? I wouldn't mind staying in Sorrento (already have a private driver to take us to Positano and Pompeii on one day), but if there are other worthwhile things, I'd love to hear ideas...

Capri is one destination/daytrip of the big three which also include Pompeii/Herculaneum and the Positano/Amalfi coast. You could make a trip out of three days in any one of these destinations. Suit yourself.

You should go to Capri on a day you can start early - since the last ferries back are not very late - only about 6pm. If the first day is shorter I would go down the coast and see Amalfi/Positano that day - when you can stay as late as you want.

Sure that's squeezing a lot into three short days, but even if you can only spend half a day in Capri, it is certainly worth the trip. Despite the crowds, despite the touristy flavor, Capri is just so beautiful. It would be a shame to miss it while you are in the area. Just plan well so that you make the most out of your time there.

If you get a chance to go into the Blue Grotto - make sure you do it when the sun is shining on that side of the island (after noon). The color of the water is absolutely breathtaking - but others we met that did it in the morning thought it was a hoax. I wondered if it was because the sun was not shining through the water. Have a great trip!

Absolutely! But dont go if not a clear day as the scenery is magnificent. Be sure to go to Ana Capri (up top) and take the cable car ride. The view from Augustus' villa down to those rocks (whose name escapes me now) is worth the trip alone. If you like lemon flavors, get lots of Limoncello -- so refreshing frozen but potent!

I hope you aren't saying you are going to Positano and Pompeii on the same day. Pompeii is definitely worth a longer look--if you are at all interested in that sort of thing. And that's the rub--you will be going to Positano primarily to see the scenery, Capri for the same reason--unless upmarket shopping is your thing.
All of these areas are likely to be crowded, ( particularly Capri). If you are not careful your sunny Italy excursion could end up feeling like a hassle. I'd personally skip either Positano or Capri and spend more time
kicking around Sorrento looking at the bay.

Steve_James: I will not have a full day. Flight arrives in Naples around noon. To save time (not money) we booked a private transfer to get us to Sorrento so we can start enjoying our time a bit sooner...
Our visit to Capri would primarily be for dinner and, perhaps, a trip to the Blue Grotto (weather permitting) beforehand.
Again, it's not imperative that we go to Capri. Pompeii and Positano were our main interests.
