Base in Burgundy

After travelling around the Bavarian Alps, Black Forest and Alsace, my husband & I are planning a week in Burgundy. We're thinking of finding a base for the week and do day trips from there. Anyone got any thoughts on a good place to use as a base? We'll have a car so transport is not an issue. We would like somewhere that isn't too remote (read has a couple of restaurants) but has a good village feel to it. Thanks!

The outskirts of Beaune would be one suggestion.

It was a B&B called Home and we could walk into Beaune within 10 minutes.

We stayed in Nuits-St. Georges which is mid way between Dijon and Beaune. The charming b& b was Domaine de Loisy. Madame de Loisy is an expert on wine and is also a certified guide She was very helpful in helping us plan our daily trip. The website is: www.domaine-de-loisy.com

In the village of Romanèche-Thorins is the pleasant Les Maritonnes, a hotel with a very good restaurant that features classic Burgunding cuisins. Great pool. The hotel is near the Château de Meurseault, the Montrachet region, and other places of note.

Outside Beaune on the way to Dijon, we stopped here for a fantastic dinner (wished we'd stayed here, it is lovely)

Thanks everyone! Has anyone out there spent time exploring the Morvan? And what about the north-western part of Burgundy, around Auxerre - is that worth spending time in or should we focus on the Dijon to Lyon area. We're interested in the food & wine as well as nice countryside.

we've spent time driving around in the morvan... it is nice to visit in summer and on a beautiful autumn day, but it is not an area I would fancy visiting during a rainy period.

Beaune is an excellent base for Burgundy. My husband and I stayed at Hotel Le Cep in early October. There are wonderful restaurants, all in walking distance - Le Benaton had to be one of the best meals we had on our entire trip (and we dined at quite a few Michelin rated restuarants). Additionally, one of our favorite experiences was a private day trip with Colette Barbier ([email protected])learing about and tasting the most fabulous wines on earth!!!

The Auxerre/Avallon region is worth a day's visit.

I highly recommend in Avallon but secluded, not in town, The Moulin Des Ruats. After three times there. I will always go back if in the area.
