We stayed at Lord of the Manor in Upper Slaughter--While I would NOT stay there again, as for the price, the place was NOT worth it....Our room price included breakfast and dinner- but when we went in for dinner, it was a limited price that we could use towards our dinner--so we spent even more on the dinner to get the Better Menu....The MANOR HOUSE is way in the country , well off the beaten path and very close to Stow-on-Wold....
Here is their website to see it: http://www.broadway-cotswolds.co.uk/lords.html BUT if you are staying in Burford, I would Highly recommend the RESTAURANT in the Lord of the Manor--It was FABULOUS and worth every penny--Similar to a Michelin restaurant in France. I feel Broadway is very touristy--usually also filled with tons of cars and buses..but it is a fantastic place to walk around.....and to have tea in the afternoon.... A terrific place to stay in Broadway is the BUCKLAND MANOR-- Here is their link: http://www.broadway-cotswolds.co.uk/buckland.html And the LYGON ARMS in Broadway is to die for: http://www.broadway-cotswolds.co.uk/lygon.html All of these are super high end Manor Houses.... |
If you are staying 7 days and want Burford - I highly recommend The Mill at Burford www.jeremy-holland.ndtilda.co.uk/
It is a water mill converted to 5 small cottages. It is down a side street so away from the heavy traffic. The working water wheel and mill pond are beautiful, there are swans and flowers everywhere, the owners provide a canoe, row boat, and bicycles for free. It is a short walk to the High street, grocery store, pubs, church, etc and also a short walk out into open countryside. If you want a smaller village - near Stanton or Stanway would be good. The pub at the top of the hill in Stanton has amazing views. In fact - there no matter where you end up staying. |
Wanted to add - jmw's suggestion of Monkton Farleigh is good if you want to see Bath/Salisbury/Wells - but it is really not a reasonable base for touring the Cotswolds. Fern cottage must have really been a wonderful place to stay because jmw recommends it frequently - they should put him on the payroll :)
For a night or 2 it might fit into your plans, however, it would be more than an hour drive even to the southern Cotswolds (i.e. Burford area). So it would do for a day trip up to the Cotswolds but not as a base to see more of the area. (I have recommendations for several great B&Bs in Wiltshire and near Bath - but did not suggest them because you were looking for someplace in the Cotswolds) |
I'll third (fourth?) the recommendation for Burford, and recommend the Burford House, which is one of my favorite places to stay ever.
www.burfordhouse.co.uk The rooms are comfortable and well-decorated, the owners are extremely friendly (and will give you good tips on places to see), and the breakfasts are heavenly. |
Hi good people. Janis, (ouch! be nice!) when we stayed at Fern Cottage, we drove up into the Cotswolds to visit Castle Combe, Lacock, Corsham Court, and a few other villages a bit farther up the road. I've no doubt that Burford might get you closer to the north end. My point was this. With seven nights in Monkton Farleigh, the range of places one can visit is really marvelous, not as repetitive as limiting one to the Cotswolds alone. (Cotswold fans, I beg your forgiveness; don't retaliate.) Just think, Exmoor, Watchet, Selworthy, Dunster, Cleeve Abbey, Wells, Glastonbury, Lyme Regis, Montecute, Stonehenge, Salisbury, Old Sarum, the white horse(can't remember which one), Stourhead, Bath, and Bradford-on-Avon.
On the payroll? I only wish. Christopher and Jenny Valentine will get a good laugh about that. Seriously, I didn't realize that anyone could possibly be annoyed by my recommendations of such a tiny place whenever the opportunity pops up. From now on, I'll preface by writing "she's back", so Janis can skip on down to the next post. What can I say, it's been years and I'm still under its spell. Be warned, we're talking tiiiiny. Affectionately, J. |
jmw - I didn't mean any offence. From how much you liked Fern Cottage it really must be a nice place (but that's what I thought I said)
My only point was it is a fine base for Wiltshire, Wessex, etc., just not necessarily a practical base for the Cotswolds. |
Come on, Janis, the comment implying that jmw was on Fern Cottages' pay roll was a bit gratuitious.
Otherwise his/her comments were right on target for a location that might give one access to the Cotwolds but also to other gorgeous parts of England. |
OK - What is the difference between jmw recommending Fern Cottage, me recommending Castle View in Edinburgh, Lori reccomending Ray Skinner, and many other similar examples? Many of us have favorites we recommend frequently - and have been "teased" about being on the payrolls.

Peace, everybody. I got out my map of Britain last night, and will admit again that the butter-colored Cotswold stone villages I saw were very much at the southern end. Sorry if I diffused the focus of the discussion. After spending seven nights in Monkton Farleigh, my friends and I thought we had discovered an excellent way to enjoy the contrasts of several counties w/o packing up and moving on. To be sure, the same benefit could be achieved by staying in Bradford-on-Avon, which by the way is a delightful town that no one ever seems to mention. Be that as it may be, I hope one day to toodle on up to the 'real' Cotswolds, and I look forward to checking out Burford.
If you'll allow me one more bit, Corsham Court, which I mentioned earlier, was a real dazzler of a house and garden. J. |
You are keeping me busy now with all these choices. Thanks for each one of them
