Base for 6 nights between Fussen and Garmisch Partenkirchen?

We had been planning on staying in Schwangau for 6 nights, but we had to change our dates and cancel the apartments we had booked.

So I was looking in the same area but I suddenly realized that maybe maybe we should consider another area more central. Reutte? Lermoos? Ehrwald? Anyone stayed in these places?

We plan on Neuschwanstein and Linderhof, Alpspitz, Wank mountain, maybe Ehrenberg Castle and Zugspitz. Priorities are castles, gorgeous views, easy hikes and walks by going up cable cars. Apartment rentals/chalet preferred so the 6 of us can hang out together, but open to options if there is a nice outdoor area to sit.

Thoughts?

As I live fairly close to these places, I have never stayed there, just visited during day trips.
The whole Ausserfern region between Ehrwald and Reutte is very nice.
Reutte is a bit more of a tiny town already, Ehrwald and Lermoos have more of village feeling.
You don't say if you will travel by car, but even when not you will have pretty easy access by train to the places you plan to visit.
If you went in winter and wanted easy access to ski lifts etc., I'd go to either Ehrwald or Lermoos.

WE have found Oberamergau to be the most convenient location.

Reutte is just a few miles from Fussen/Schwangau so makes little difference. Kind of cute town IME but like Schwangau better.

Oberamergau or Garmisch both have great rentals and are beautiful places to stay. Public transportation, great places to eat and lovely downtown areas.

I loved staying in Garmisch-P for a week doing day trips to Munich and the type of places you mention.

Oberammergau is nice too - think those two would be great bases - buses go to Fussen or from Garmsich you can take a train to Reutte, a few-mile bus or taxi ride from Fussen thru the gap in the mountains.

So how about Lermoos? Right in the middle

We stayed in GAP last year and did enjoy it......and most of our activity might be there.........however Lermoos does look scenic and with hiking

One niece loves cities (we will be in Rome and Prague) and the other niece loves outdoors....so looking fo immediate access from apartment/hotel to walks etc for outdoorsy niece

Too bad swandav has not chimed in - she lives in G-P and knows the area so well.

one vote for fussen never stayed in the other places but stayed in fussen and it is beautiful

daba78 I agree, Fussen looks beautiful, that is why we booked there in the first place

However since that didn't work out, and I haven't found another place there that I am in love with ......looking at options

Pal, wrenwood usually drives on the vacations, and I think that's the wrong thing to do in this area, where public transportation is soooo good. I can't help with folks who choose to drive . . .

And, well, in addition, I've never been to Füssen and am not familiar with the land between there and GaP.

swandav2000 I agree the public transport in Europe is pretty awesome. We've been car free twice in Switzerland, and once in Italy and once in England. Next year we will be without a car in Rome and in Prague.

However when we are in the countryside we love exploring back roads, and the luxury of being able to stop where we want, when we want, to take pictures, or sit and have a picnic, and to make discoveries off the beaten path. And shopping is no fun if you have to carry your purchases with you all day, much easier to put them into the trunk of your car!

At the moment I'm been looking at Lermoos, it looks very pretty, and halfway between Fussen and GAP.

Well, wrenwood, I can understand what drives your desire to drive.

However, Global Climate Change is already damaging the environment here in Bavaria. Our winters are getting warmer and warmer, and last ski season had springtime conditions in February, and it was cut short by a few weeks. There is no longer summertime snow on the Zugspitze, and scientists say that all of the glaciers in Bavaria will be gone in 30 years.

So, now you can see what drives my desire to get folks onto public transportation.
